THE UNTOUCHABLES - Full Length Reaction!

This is one of the movies where I never understand all of the praise and adulation that it receives. I think it's an "okay" film, but for me it stops there. Every time I see people praising it to high-heaven I shake my head and go "...really? Okay, if that's what you like." Maybe it's because it can't seem to keep its own moral straight. Eliot Ness and Jimmy Malone have that big conversation where Malone lays out 'the Chicago way' and how Ness will need to go EXTREME lengths to stop Capone...except it turns out that no, he actually doesn't need to do that. It is the boring, technicality-driven area of tracking finances that brings Capone down. Ness does progressively cross his own moral lines throughout the film, but it never helps the case. And it might be that THAT'S the moral, that abandoning your own morals isn't actually a good thing, but they never stick to that, either. At the end he kills a man who is already arrested and in custody and then...the movie ends. He never grapples with the guilt of that action, never faces consequences but accepts them with Manly Stoicism because it was Necessary For The Job, he just murders somebody for revenge and then goes about his day. Plus, the film is so divorced from what actually happened that I want to call it straight fiction. But a lot of other people seem to REALLY love it.

...and speaking of Andy Garcia, I also suggest Black Rain (1989) with Michael Douglas and directed by Ridley Scott. #BlackRainForAddieCounts https://youtu.be/RBP-zNZyewo?feature=shared

The staircase scene at the end is a homage to "Battleship Potemkin", a silent era Soviet film from 1925, considered to be one of the all time greats. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battleship_Potemkin You can see the complete scene from the 1925 film here (the baby pram segment is right at the end): https://youtu.be/K1Vx3AOpVDo

Now you'll get the spoof at the beginning of the third "Naked Gun" movie, should you ever react to it (hint, hint -- obviously you'd have to also do the second one first). 🤨

This is definitely my favorite Brian De Palma film and my favorite Kevin Costner film as well. 🙂 It's also one of my favorite Sean Connery films, although he's been in quite a few bangers over the years so it's a closer call with him! It's just filled to the brim with memorable scenes, it's such a great movie. The cast is top notch, there are a lot of interesting shots, a kind of unusual but cool musical score, a great sense of pacing to build tension, and the story just keeps you engaged. Honestly it's hard to find any faults in this one. Man, between this and some of the other movies Addie's already slated for March, it's looking like a good month! 😄

Brian DePalma is a master at puckering up your bunghole. This movie’s train station scene; Mission Impossible CIA break-in scene; Carrie climax; Dressed to Kill; Blow Out, Body Double; et al.

Speaking of Brian De Palma, I also suggest Obsession (1976), Carrie (1976), Scarface (1983), Body Double (1984), Casualties of War (1989), Raising Cain (1992), Carlito's Way (1993), Snake Eyes (1998), Mission to Mars (2000), and The Black Dahlia (2006). #MoreBrianDePalmaForAddieCounts

Being a huge Brian DePalma fan, and a Kevin Costner fan, this is a real treat for me. I have watched it upwards of a hundred times since seeing it in the theater, and it always keeps me glued to the screen.

I saw this in the theater after I graduated high school. I went to visit my mother in D.C., but she ended up having to work the whole time, so all we did was go to movies. We saw a lot of good, fun movies that summer including this one and Raising Arizona. Fun memories.

Brian De Palma's camera work was fantastic. I really enjoyed this time period. Maybe we can check out more movies from this era in the future.

Speaking of Sean Connery (RIP), I also suggest two Universal Pictures movies: Alfred Hitchcock's Marnie (1964), also with 'Tippi' Hedren, from The Birds (1963), in the title role, (https://youtu.be/QV_2-v_dsAU?feature=shared) & DragonHeart (1996) (https://youtu.be/U1fktWItMPc?feature=shared). #MoreSeanConneryForAddieCounts

Happy Wednesday, Addie. I'm so glad that you enjoyed The Untouchables (1987). I just got this movie on DVD and I can't wait to watch it because if I signed up for some action, I'm gonna get it. BTW, I do hope that you'll watch the extended version of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991). That version will enhance your enjoyment of it even further. #RobinHoodPrinceOfThievesExtendedVersionForAddieCounts

Happy Wednesday, Addie! 😊 RIP always to Sean Connery! This is easily one of my top 5 favorite Kevin Costner films. It's always a must-watch for me whenever it's on tv. For even more Kevin Costner, I very highly recommend the 1994 movie "Wyatt Earp". Definitely looking forward to watching this reaction later this evening. Have a great day today! 😊

Yeah. Great score, great acting and just straight up great moments. I'll catch up with this reaction in a moment.
