Monthly WIP #1: RE Street Design

Happy Monday! For today's WIP, let's take a look at another background from the original Red Embrace--the city street background!

Back when we first started working on Red Embrace (Fall 2017), we originally planned to have it mobile-only, with a vertical format designed for phones. As a result, one of the backgrounds--the city street--is actually laid out vertically.

Very soon after we started work on the game, though, we decided to target RE for PC, as well. But a vertical resolution doesn't work so well on a widescreen monitor, does it?

(Above: Second WIP, adding in more lighting and coloring)

Unfortunately, by the time we decided to make this switch, the street background was already complete. We really liked the way it turned out, but because of its perspective, we would've had to entirely remake the BG in order to have it fit a desktop resolution.

So instead, our in-game pans and zooms had to be more creative. There isn't as much of the horizontal movement that we normally implement in our games--instead, the camera pans up the sidewalk and across the distant buildings in order to evoke a sense of movement.

Our background artist, Box of Lizards, actually started working on a draft for an alternate (landscape) street version, as seen above. The BG was never finished, but it's interesting to think how the atmosphere of RE's street scenes might've changed with a more open, horizontal BG instead of the smaller portrait version.

Moral of the story: Be careful in choosing your game's resolution! But if you DO have to make a change later on, all is not lost! Exercise your creativity!
