Paladin Damage (2 Handed)

Paladin Damage (2 Handed) Paladin Damage (2 Handed)

Yes plenty of cheese 🧀 is available for paladins and warlocks

DOUGLAS REYNOLDS

DnD Beyond disagrees. I'd adds potent spellcasting to it via the Druid which is analogous. Is that a bug? Maybe. Or maybe it's intended. It is certainly worded differently than true strike or the blade cantrips though.

Bryan Lemieux

I think RAW agonizing blast would not count for Shillelagh because it is not itself a damaging cantrip

Chad S

I'm still amazed by how close everything is to each other at the those levels everyone plays. Can't wait till the ranger the video. Which I expect a dual welding ranger will be around the barbarian. And will hit the warlock baseline at level 5. But of course they really plateau after level 8. With big jumps coming again at levels 17, 19, and 20

Adam Gillis

I think that's a valid interpretation, but when applied to True Strike (to say nothing of BB/GFB) the same logic feels faulty- on the other hand, it definitely feels faulty to say Magic Weapon is a damaging spell, hence the open question

If we want to be extra nutty after Paladin 3 or 6, go back into Warlock for Devouring Blade, or Valor Bard to add True Strike to one of our attacks. The Cha classes all just mesh so well together- hell we can even add Sorcerer in for Seeking/Subtle/Quickened Spell and possibly a Subclass Feature of Choice- I can't say no to Tides of Chaos lol Maybe something like Pali 6/Valor 6/Warlock 4/ Sorcerer 4? XD Like its absolutely ridiculous but its a legitimately solid build. Two attacks, one replaced with a Cantrip (True Strike), Quicken Spell => Wild Magic, Cha to Saves, 2x to Attacks and Damage, plenty of HP, missing out on 2 feats but you can still get a Boon if you time your level 4s correctly

4RoryVT

I'm sure Chris will touch on the dip- my question is if 1) we use Pact of the Tome to get Shillelagh and 2) Whether or not Agonizing Blast can be applied to Shillelagh damage from PotT Adding double Cha to Attack AND Damage with Oath of Devotion feels nutty. Obviously a bit of a roadblock with Bonus Action priority, but we'll manage.

4RoryVT

I don't think its the RAI so I didn't add it to original comment, but there is A reading that GWF says "you may treat any 1 or 2 on A (emphasis mine) weapon die as a 3" in which case you can assume you get at least ONE 1 from a fistful of dice, so say it adds 2 damage per hit.

4RoryVT

no... I mean, okay favorable reading, it adds 0.75 average to Divine Favor and 0.375 damage per d8 rolled, so maybe we're adding 4-5 damage on a critical smite with divine favor up? If we don't smite and don't crit, but do have divine favor and radiant strikes we add... 2 damage per hit with Great Sword? Giving it every advantage, it's... fine. Comparable to the Graze Mastery, maybe.

4RoryVT

Shillelagh is not a cantrip that does damage. It’s a cantrip that affects the functionality of a weapon. That weapon, in turn, is doing the damage.

There’s No Race Like Gnome

Open Question- I should really put this on a Warlock Vid but it's relevant to Paladins who multiclass- can you apply Agonizing Blast to damage from Shillelagh (acquired from PotT so its a Warlock cantrip)? Rephrased, is Shillelagh a "cantrip which deals damage"? (AB wording) You can only apply proficiency to any roll once, but I don't see any rules saying you can't stack the ability damage

4RoryVT

I would love a weapon style comparison of 2H, duel wield, ranged, thrown, sword and board, and maybe a wilde odd weapon combo between the fighter, barb, pally, rogue and monk I know valor and weaponlock exist but I'm curious as to how the different weapon styles mix with the different classes

Great video I do not want to hear anymore whining about the paladin. Divine favor is awesome easy radiant damage to apply.. no concentration... now you can throw on shield of faith or protection from evil... Paladin is still unstoppable

DOUGLAS REYNOLDS

did you remember to reduce the GWM bonus action attack chance by the chance you will use a smite on that crit because they both use a bonus action?

Ian

One point I think you got wrong about fighting styles in this video, barring errata that I don't know about: There is nothing in the paladin or ranger description of fighting styles indicating that either of these classes can switch fighting styles upon leveling up, in contrast to the fighter class description which explicitly says you can do that. All the paladin class says you can switch is one of your cantrips if you selected Blessed Warrior.

David Knott

I really like your analyses. But I think you are still sleeping on Great Weapon Fighting. Nowhere does it state that it only applies to base weapon damage. If you apply it to smites and divine favour and radiant strikes later on, the damage increase is not bad at all.

Manuel Kopp

Just guessing it’s because Colby and others have covered it, maybe Chris wanted to try something different. Definitely looking forward to trying all of these out!

Tristram

I am suprised you didn't consider dual wielding paladin.

Alex D.

Obviously not expecting you to cover every permutation, but I’m pretty excited to play a two-handed paladin with a warlock dip (maybe Oath of Devotion for double CHA to hit). The bonus to str from GWM doesn’t seem wasted on this build because it can take you from 14 to 15 str for Plate (still letting you start with a 16 CON and 17 CHA).
