You're right, p23 in the 2024 PHB confirms it's a Dex check. Thanks for your answer.

Dominique Coene

Initiative…at least in 5e…is explicitly referred to as an ability check.

Cynnamon

Am I mistaken that you can't use Tides of Chaos to gain Advantage on your inititiave, as explained around 37:58? ToC gives advantage on a D20 Test only, so only attacks, saves or ability checks.

Dominique Coene

nm. discovered my error.

Any idea how the 29-32 entry on the Wild Magic Surge table would interact with Sorcerous Burst or the new Chromatic Orb? Do we get maximum dice explosions and bounces, or none because there is no rolling? As a DM I would allow maximum carnage for the 4% chance it happens, but was curious how that would work RAW.

Frank Bastian

I wonder if you are undervaluing the Draconic Sorc capstone a little. By Quickening another spell, the "no spell slot" draconic spirit is a way to cheat out 2 leveled spells in a turn. It isn't game breaking, but a Sorc that wants to put two draconic spirits on the board is probably pretty happy with it.

Andrew Jensen

Thanks!

I agree with your take on the option. From what I'm reading, I believe you are considered an "unwilling creature" for the spell, in which succeeding on the save would simply resist the polymorph itself. If you were willing to be polymorphed, there would be no save and you would just become a goat.

Echo Effect

Minor typo in the name of the video: "Handbook" is misspelled.

hmm. Not sure about the scaling on wild sorcery. There's a couple that obviously get a lot better at high levels, but there are more, I think, that will look lack lustre. OTOH, there are several that will end low level encounters, or at least severely shift the balance. Expect a few cries of OP when a low level sorcerer hits a streak of 4d10 damage into Unicorn into fireball over a couple of encounters. Would have been nice to see a bit of scaling, possibly based off proficiency. I suppose high level wild sorcerer s will roll a lot more often though.

Since some people have referred to Innate Sorcery as a sort of "Sorcerer Range" ability, does that mean that D&D 5E now has an in game nerd rage?

David Knott

I think your right the old version is not there anymore. But if Im not mistaken, there is a new way to make up for it. The psionic spells can be cast with socery points thanks to psionic sorcery ,not expanding a spell slot. The new rule called "one spell with a spell slot per turn" changes the way how this feature works. Cast a spell with sorcery points from psionic spells and quicken another spell... you see where im getting with that YOU CAN CAST 2 SPELLS with this subclass. You giving up a lot of ressources but im willing to make that bargain.

Richard Peters

Your do it all god mage is going to need an update, back to wizard?

Anton Vroon

That's a great point! Also take into account that you could quicken them too

WMS Table 57-60: 9. Polymorph - It seems like if you succeed on the saving throw you wouldn't turn into a goat or anything else, but Chris is suggesting you would be able to choose what you turn into like a Giant Ape if you succeed. Am I missing something here?

I think it's important to note for the Aberrant's Psionic Sorcery feature; while there are definitely nerfs, because you are using Sorcery Points and not spell slots then it allows you to cast other spells with spell slots thanks to the new rules regarding spells It's not a massive boon because none of the Psionic Sorcerery spells are a bonus action but I think it's worth noting that with the feature you could do something like cast Dissonant Whispers with sorcery points and then Misty Step as a bonus action with a spell slot

Isaac

The new sorcerer feels really good! I'm itching to transfer the changes into my current PC, though I gotta say I got an Aberrant sorcerer that I themed around a Jean Gray + teleports style. Thus I ditched all "aberrant" spells and replaced them with thematically appropriate ones (yes I swapped summon aberration). The fact that the extra spells cannot be swapped makes me a bit sad.

Morrock

What a shame, they didn't give Sorcerer's True Polymorph. Dragon Sorcerers still cannot turn into Dragons or Aberrant Sorcerers into Mind Flayers or Clockwork Sorcerers into Inevitables- yet Bards and Wizards can. Also shame we didn't keep Arcane Eruption from the UA, really liked that spell. At least we kept Sorcerous Burst! That was nice!
