The Shawshank Redemption (runtime 2:22:32) - Patreon Version

It's time for more Stephen King!!

Oh my god, this movie was incredible... no wonder it's so famous! Thank you so so so much for recommending we watch it. A lot of you said The Green Mile is also a must see, so I really want to watch that one next for Stephen King movies. If it's even half as good as Shawshank Redemption, then I know we'll love it!

I'm a big movie dude and I get asked everyone once in awhile from friends, family co-workers etc what movies do I consider "perfect". My answer for years is Shawshank and It's a Wonderful Life. So good. If you have not seen it, I do recommend you all both watch "The Count of Monte Cristo" with Jim Caviezel and Guy Pierce. It's so good and a few co stars you may recognize..

So a few facts about the film; The movie actually flopped during its theatrical run. It wasn't until it was released on VHS from word of mouth that people needed to see it and that proved successful. It has been consistently ranked as IMDB's number 1 movie for most of the last 30 years. I only just now noticed this detail during this watch-along but If you listen to Morgan Freeman's voice from the beginning of his narration to the end he makes an effort to make his voice sound younger and lighter as the narration begins and it becomes older and deeper in tone as the story progresses and he gets older, a nice detail of the passage of time. Red says he doesn't want to know what the two Italian ladies are singing about on the record, this is probably good because the song is actually about two sisters plotting to expose the infidelity of the lover of one of the sisters. Director Frank Darabont picked it because he figured this is what "being free" would have felt like being heard by the men in the prison even when they don't know what the words really mean. After word of mouth convinced people to see the movie on VHS it became so succesful the film was re-released in theaters and made around $73 Million the second time after bombing the first time.
