What's Everyone's Thoughts on This?

The rules seem well intentioned, but too broad for someone to come along and evaluate each video correctly. Also creators / evaluators in bad faith will only muddy the waters ("oh this video isnt really for kids wink wink"). Age restricted videos here we come!

I'll try to be fair and also somewhat contrarian. I think the FTC is well-intentioned, and as someone who finds the silicon valley data collection really invasive, I admire them for going after YouTube over it. However, their guidelines really need to distinguish between kid-targeted content and general / mature content related to kid-friendly material. On a practical level, though, things will probably be ok. The FTC doesn't have the resources to fine every single small creator, and it seems like YouTube is letting creators regulate themselves. It's the large, actually kid-targeted channels that should be worried. If you want to be somewhat safe, I've seen a few people preparing to put disclaimers at the start of their videos which state that their content contains mature themes / language, or serves a mature audience because of [this or that] reason. What I'm wondering is if this will have a ripple effect on all the other major websites. When watching the FTC press conference for myself, I noticed that the speakers kept talking about it as though was a landmark settlement; that they're holding a service liable for independently uploaded content. I'm of the opinion that YouTube is a sinking ship, so normally I'd go "well, eventually we'll all be on some other site anyways." But now, I'm wondering if all the other sites are gonna rush to make similar content age classification systems to make sure they're compliant.

I'm gonna but on my tin hat for a sec. You know YouTube operates at a loss for Google/alphabet. Hosting all that video isn't cheap. Do you think this + the new "deem profitable" clause in the new terms is a way for YouTube to trim the fat in a way that publicly doesn't make them look like a bad investment while courting the established media?

I think it's a good case to sue the FTC for violating the vagueness doctrine. When one of the descriptions is "animated characters" everything from Peppa pig to off brand anime falls into that category. Secondly wasn't this whole thing about target ads? How in the world is punishing the creators on YouTube going to solve that?

I think it will be a similar vibe of when they were cracking down on pirating music. The way YouTube is handling it is just absurd and will drive away a lot of people for sure.
