Neither of these statements are a hyperbole or a joke, by the way. We were both looking for love from the wrong place - on Grindr - when we started talking. My boyfriend had a picture of a galaxy as his profile picture, and eventually I decided that I don't care if he looks like a toad, I want to meet him. Seeing him for the first time, the first thing I thought was "oh, he's beautiful too?"
And yes, he has admitted that he originally had no idea what gender I was. To be more specific, he wasn't sure of the exact details before it was bedroom time. Our first language doesn't have gendered pronouns, so it never came up in conversation, and I was altogether very androgynous-looking back then. But my boyfriend is very much bisexual and was entirely unbothered, figuring that he'll find out eventually and that he'll be just as happy with whatever he finds.
Also, he asked me to include this audioclip, quote from a game he's been playing with his little brother, which sums up his feelings from the time - timestamp should work, but if it doesn't, it's 3:40-3:46
