Status update from kd-11 (01-10-2021)

Hi,

It's kd-11 with another development update for RPCS3, the PS3 emulator.

A lot of progress was made in the month of September, here are the highlights:

1. Driver compatibility and support was improved, fixing graphics issues and crashes on AMD and INTEL GPU hardware.

2. Reversed and implemented indexed attribute read in shaders which fixed graphics glitches in some games.

3. Fixed crashes when running RPCS3 in a wayland session. There are other Qt shortcomings that manifest themselves when running on Wayland that still exist (such as missing window decorations randomly) but at least you can use wayland iself without much issue now.

4. Fixed and cleaned up some problems introduced by FSR implementation which was discussed in the last update.

5. Fixed a surface cache regression that broke some games like Resistance 3.

6. Fixed some texture decoder problems that led to broken lighting and shadow in games (e.g Insomniac titles)

7. Implemented precise ZCULL statistics generation which fixed visuals in many titles including Demon's Souls, The Darkness, Killzone, etc

8. Fixed a lot of spec violations that appeared on upgrading the development SDK from release 148 to 189. A lot more checks and validations have been added to the tooling making it easier to debug crashes that are hard to reproduce on my system.

9. Started working on some much needed Vulkan optimizations. This led to most titles running a bit faster now and some running much faster (upto 30% if you are not CPU limited running CELL). This paves the way for more work going forward, the goal is to match the excellent performance observed in open-source GPU drivers such as radeonsi.

For now, optimizations and bug fixes are my main focus, to keep the momentum going and getting more games into the playable category. I plan to revisit the async compute implementation that I had started work on as well as trying to knock off a few bugs off my list each week.

Thank you all for your continued support,

Regards,

kd-11
