If you haven’t read UsedtobeHMC’s epic AU Eccentric Orbits (and I do mean epic — it makes a thick graphic novel), please treat yourself. You’ll fly through it and want more. It’s vibes of The Fifth Element and Star Wars, but it’s also a story that’s nothing like I’ve read before. Very exciting, funny, fascinating, with moments of unspeakable, megalophobia-inducing cosmic horror and head-spinning Now It All Makes Sense reveals. Exactly up my alley.
She asked for a Kowloon/Tokyo/NYC aesthetic. The background is from an ungoverned space station called Shangri-la full of markets, shops, restaurants, arcades, clubs, capsule hotels, probably some dens of ill repute. They get into some sudden trouble there, and I thought it would be the perfect thing for the cover!
This is just a quick color mock-up for the proof, to see how it all looks in print. I’m excited to really clean it up and make it pretty! And I want to draw more of that blob guy in the upper left who’s handing off some dango to a customer, he looks fun.
You can read Eccentric Orbits on Jen’s Instagram, or if you want a nice organized collection, subscribe to her Patreon! Or just wait til the book comes out and get your hot little fingers on a copy!
