Creatine Supplementation - How does it affect the brain?

When talking about creatine supplementation, people ask how potent its effects are concerning their physical performance, e.g., how much stronger they may become, how long it will take to notice any significant results, or should they take it pre/post-workout. However, nobody asks how it affects their brain's functions. Should they? Does creatine affect the brain in any significant manner?

Creatine is a compound synthesized from amino acids (arginine, methionine, and glycine) and can be mainly found in muscles but is also stored in high amounts in the brain. Creatine plays an essential role in energy production (power generation and ATP regeneration of muscles and "energy generation" used for mental activity).

The influence of creatine on cognitive functions is almost as potent as its influence on physical performance. Accordingly to many controlled studies, creatine is one of the few compounds, which will directly and positively affect intelligence, and it is only the cherry on top. Creatine will interact with serotonin receptors, which may improve the effectiveness of SSRI therapy. It is also proved that creatine significantly improves memorization processes, reduces fatigue, and has neuroprotective properties (energy supplies for neurons are much better available, which helps them overcome tougher challenges while still surviving).

Therefore, creatine has the potential to:

- improve general intelligence

- improve memorization

- reduce fatigue

- protect neurons and encourage their growth

- help to overcome depression

Creatine is highly beneficial for athletes, but it's also a compound beneficial for all everybody who aims to improve cognitive functions.

The average dosage estimates 5g daily taken by mouth.

Creatine is safe to use for people at (almost) every age. Studies disclosed that dosages up to 30g per day are safe for healthy adults. The only main contraindication is kidneys diseases, and in such a case its supplementation should be first consulted with a physician.
