To allow it to be slightly less weird in my mind. I'm just gonna choose to assume that the physical relationship stuff in his book, was implied as having happened. As a way of telling the reader the kind of relationship his characters had. That being the sex sells bit, I hope. Rather than written out as part of the books narrative. Because the second option is just warped, and honesty should have given Joan some huge causes for concern. Such a bizarre choice to include these pervy details in this subplot. Joan would have been displeased without it, and only severed to make her stepfather look very creepy. Which is contrey to the ending that they wanted to play out.
