Comments

Ted M Jones, the US Navy was "Dry." The consumption of alcohol on board U.S. Navy vessels was prohibited by General Order 99, effective 1 July 1914, issued by Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels on 1 June 1914.

Regarding the allied war crimes question, it is also important to remember the fact that the kind of situation they’re in does have a psychological effect on people. The continuous strain, exhaustion, fear, and possibly anger built-up, combined with some of the specific things you read about in some survivor accounts, is simply going to affect those people, even change them in a way, as well as possibly change their understanding of some concepts from civilian life. The book “On Killing” takes a hard look at this, including the psychological struggle of teaching young recruits going to combat that they have to kill even though they’d always been told up until then that killing is wrong, and then the equal struggle of trying to teach these same persons after having been to war that killing is once again wrong even though they’d just been drilled to understand it was necessary. As a personal family example that’s sort of similar, I had a great uncle who was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and spent the rest of the European war in a POW camp— when he came back relatives who knew him said he was always different afterward, that something had changed in him. Bear in mind this is not an effort to excuse, but to explain— although I can freely admit I empathize with my brothers.

Those admirals who died at the end of WW2 were also heavy smokers, I believe. It wasn't just stress. And aside from Spruance, most USN officers were heavy drinkers as well.

Ted M Jones

Would a modern BB want anything larger than 12" guns? Maybe autoloading 12".

Ted M Jones

Speaking of subjects that aren't in your wheelhouse, I would love to know your thoughts on the engine pods ad bow thrusters that are common today. Would these things be useful on warships? Would these technologies have been possible if someone had thought of them earlier on?

Ted M Jones

Now I'm giggling at the idea of Chief O'Brien ripping and tearing through Red Squad before taking command of the Valiant.
