The Pit Retrospective

I'm going to be doing periodic pages like this going over things in my head to get them out. There will be tutorials along the way so that people can emulate or learn from my work. There will be discussions on style and explorations of implementing variations to create something unique. I also want this to be interactive.

So for this second image I'd like you to (if you have the time and energy) fill in the graph with whatever you think would help me. Show me where on the graph you think my best work would be and also where you think I need to avoid. Write as much as you want. Explain how you perceive my work. Whatever you feel like. Upload it to imgur or any image hosting site and drop a link into the comments. I will look at all of them and give feed back if I feel it necessary. If you want to copy and paste your favorite image onto the graph that might help me even more, so I can get an idea of what you like and also how you interpret the work.

I think this could be informative and fun. I won't charge for any of these Retrospective pages. They're just for me to share with you my knowledge, feelings and insights.

Wait is Pit white?!?

Ryuk Freecs

I have literally grown up watching your art from a fat, I'm personally glad that you started Patreon

leadcurves

I genuinely appreciated this bio comic. Like I've been following your work for a while. Glad I'm helping and supporting YOU now

B

This is awesome. I’ve been a fan of yours since JP’s. I had NO idea he made that much money from your work. It’s a shame. Your art really did change the world of online erotic comics. What you’ve done is unparalleled. Those first comics of yours are absolutely legendary ❗️❗️❗️ They were like nothing else I’d ever seen. Your pinups are spectacular❗️❗️❗️ If possible, I’d love to see modern versions of those pinups. I’m proud of you for stepping out on your own. It’s not easy. It takes lots of courage.

Curtis Willis

I was wondering Pit, if you had to put in order all of your work. Which do you enjoy/enjoyed the most drawing.

jake

Honestly I am still mystified how you did that early stuff with colored pencils. It looks like a painting! The image of Kitty serenely licking up that load is still beautiful and bold. I think what's remarkable is you made the transition from old-school traditional media with colored pencils, into digital coloring on hand drawings, then to digital color on digital drawings in a seamless and natural progression. And the 3D modeling was awesome too. Still would love to see a line of figurines we could buy.

Hammertyme

Thanks for this insight into your history and process!

Fellatrix

I love the nitty gritty of style and taste and the mechanics of artwork. Thank you for this <3 <3 <3

Curly Jin

Would you ever entertain private commissions for comix that wouldn't be available to the public?

J Arco

In retrospect this might not have been the best way to communicate my thoughts but oh well. Time sunk. Sound Warning: https://gofile.io/d/XkOpLO

MeinFischer

Well said. I don't necessarily agree with everything but I liked the bit you said about simple things elevating single images into a cohesive story.

MeinFischer

Hello, sorry I cant upload but i would say between the two images on the right on the proportion scale. I would go more on the realism side and less on the cartoon side on the rendering scale. good luck for the following see ya

DjéDjé

Oh shoot! I've never seen those Snow White pics before!

MeinFischer

I think there is something to be appreciated from everywhere along the axes you presented. If you enjoy each style (and you are very clearly talented enough to do any of them) then why should you or those enjoying the art be constrained to only enjoying a subset of the styles you are capable of? Your most recent animated posts are also incredibly impressive. As for my preferences on your overall work, I really enjoy the comic content that you do (and recently the animations), regardless of specific art style. I think you nailed it when you said the comics were evocative of cheesy porn dvds - and there is nothing wrong with that! In my opinion, having multiple scenes and some comic-style sound effects and just a bit of dialogue can really elevate the experience from looking at individual pictures to seeing them as a cohesive story... A cohesive story that involves people with very exaggerated body parts that can't really be conveyed in other mediums. That is definitely part of what makes it special. A final point that some others have mentioned is the raceplay. I don't mean to kink shame anyone, but that is probably my least favorite part of your older work (it seems like you have moved away from it a bit recently).

RedBishop

Not good at criticizing since I mostly focus on the good, so it took a bit of time to come up with something. https://imgur.com/a/e9Zy9lf

Starloco

I love sample but I refered cartoon is better style than rendering excepted realism.

Minh Thanh Hoang

I love the bottom right pic of Krystal, perfect blend of realism/cartoon. But I also love the powergirl comic which has much more emphasis on the line art. I've been drawing for about 3 years now and sometimes I feel like drawing realistically and sometimes I want to go wild with exaggeration. I think you should just draw however you feel like on the day.

No

I'd need a third axis to plot with. Some kind of cube that could be viewed in VR with suspended bimbos in different styles. :D

Pit-erotic

LOL no I've rarely drawn my self and never in a sex act. Would you want to see that? I could always make an idealized version of my self and have the power of breaking the 4th wall. The Deadpool of porn comics.

Pit-erotic

Do you ever draw urself cucking harold?

J dog

Bit of a Scott McCloud disciple, Pit? Understanding Comics should be required reading in every primary school, it really helped me to understand the intentions and efficacy of all art, not just comics. I’ve said this before, but it’s a point that bears repeating: If I wanted “realistic” porn, I’d go watch a real video of real people really fucking. Turns out, there is a lot of that on the ol’ Internet, literal zettabytes of it. When you view it all through a McCloudian lens, stripped of performer identities and costumes and worrisome (but cheap to film!) incest tropes, you realize that there is vanishingly little actual novelty in the sex acts central to all that set dressing. Jay Sin tried to show the world genuine sexual creativity, but instead of emulating that, the industry chose to publish 400 plasticized Brazzers scenes a day. FFS, I can’t even locate a proper penis out there - it’s against the ToS to ask a girl to fuck a 13-inch dildo on Chaturbate, and Jonah Falcon is a goddamned liar! If anything, your art is my refuge from “realistic” porn. Regarding the other axis, your realistic rendering is fantastic, but as it must come at the cost of turnaround time, I’d rather have way more doubly-unrealistic lineart over a handful of painstakingly lit and colored pieces, however gorgeous (though man-hour exceptions will absolutely be made for more lewd animations, they’re great). Basically, something like this: https://i.imgur.com/DIO6ix0.png Ofc, there’s going to be a different sweet spot for every project, but I never cared much for the raceplay stuff anyway; sci-fi and comic book shit is more thematically interesting AND the sexual possibilities are far greater. IMO, you are at your best when you have blown straight past physiological plausibility, when you are drawing the unfilmable and thinking the unthinkable (and viva la belly bulges)! However fraught the journey, thanks for 20(!) years of envelope-pushing porn, sir. I can’t wait to see where you take things in the next 20!

Degenernate

cool bro!

Hi Pit, it's interesting to be able to get to know you in some way through this post and the avatar in cartoon format. The styles I prefer are the more cartoonish ones: the two images at the bottom. I personally love to see the work in progress to understand if I can use them as a basis to create my own drawing style. I have also been drawing since I was 4 for my own pleasure. Now I'm 46 but the desire to draw and sculpt has not passed. Seeing everything you produce is fantastic. I would like also to see how you produce your animations that are so beautiful.

Leobiart

Wow very informative! It's crazy the story with John person. After the good thing is that you are promoting yourself and your creations! I've always been interested in having a tuto of your art! I can't wait to see it and practice. Here is my Scale of your art with my favorite Pinup and that I find the best of your drawing talent. https://i.imgur.com/8m2IbUX.png

Poundmotion3D

I myself prefer very cartoonish proportions. But of the two bottom ones the right is my personal winner. Probably because it's so close to the artstyle that I want to learn. But I have to ask: are the realistic renders more work or is it just a different process but similiar time consumption?

Phastrox

Love stuff like this from you Pit, great to hear more about you and how you see your own work. Have you considered doing a Q&A? Would be great to hear more about your inspirations and your favourite pieces/what you like about them.

Will Chesterfield

Thank you for sharing your story with us! If it weren't for you and NiteQ I wouldn't be producing and doing sissy comix and art. Your amazingly edgy BBC comics and Interracial art and glossy finish on the painting was surreal. So thank you for being an incredible artist. you have helped inspire so many people! Thank you. Always your patron. BTW did you start as PITTMAN and do all those xmen shemale stuff back in the day?

Devin Dickie

This is both a surprise and a delight to see! I'll definitely be filling one of these out soon. Also looking forward to reading other's opinions.

MeinFischer

One thing that also stands out on the matrix aspect is the level of “bimboism” your characters have. This might fall in the realism/cartoon dimension, but I think it’s actually a subtle but separate axis. Some of my favorite works of yours are where they are less fully bimboized, though some of the more over-the-top style ones work great.

M R

Really interesting stuff, very much appreciate the vulnerability you’re showing, putting yourself out there like this. I was wondering if you are comfortable discussing the use of the N-word, and whether or not going forward, it’s appropriate for you to use in future work. I know much of your writing was based on or borrowing from Stormbringer’s work, so perhaps those were direct quotes. Just curious on your stance on the language that has been used vs what you might use in the future. I also totally understand if you don’t want to discuss that, as this is a distraction from the current ‘Art Style’ discussion. Cheers man!

DonkeyDongMan

Me too

Leobiart

https://pixlr.com/x/#editor is a great free alt to PS. Works great and super simple!

MagneticEntanglement

The art in the box is placed based on their characteristics. Also, none of them are fully in any corner because I don't do full realism at any point of even a purely cartoon drawing. They just lean in different directions to varying degrees.

Pit-erotic

literally couldn't sleep, was so excited to make a graph I couldn't wait till morning!

MagneticEntanglement

https://imgur.com/WL2SNA6 i made this with a ton of love, it was hard finding standout favorites because lets face it you are really talented artist!

MagneticEntanglement

So I am interpreting this as lower left is your early work with Jenny and Kitty looking only slightly somewhat unrealistic and now we have gone full cartoon (especially in the faces)? If I am correct I prefer the earlier style *BUT* I am here to support you and your artistic freedom. I have really enjoyed seeing you try new styles and ways to create! I hope you are having fun and you keep it up!!!!!!

dnuhlv43

Your comment isn't constructive unless you consider promoting my creative freedom constructive. I do and it's encouraging to hear.

Pit-erotic

I literally cannot do this because I genuinely love and admire all of your work and styles, both old and new. It's so interesting because I know there are some areas you feel are stronger than others, but even the examples you give of things that are "bad" really seem quite amazing to me...contrary to what some others have posted, I daresay I sometimes miss some of the old/realism style (though I adore the newer styles too). Haha, I suppose if you're looking for constructive feedback what I'm saying here isn't too helpful, but I also hope you take that to mean that it's perfectly okay to explore whatever artistic style you're interested in at any given moment. Others might have differing opinions of course, but me personally, I'm here for pretty much anything and everything you feel comfortable sharing. It's a privilege for us. P.S. I *think* this is the first time ever we've gotten a glimpse of you as a human being (in art form at least). Hooray! I realize privacy is very important and I respect that, but I greatly appreciate even the few details you shared with us about your personal history. It'll be nice going forward for your patrons to have at least some mental image of you -- it's humanizing and it's a good thing :-)

Mister Glitch

Have to agree. Part of the 'fun' of the digital art is that you can go cartoonish on style and proportion and I love to see the stuffed full of plastic and sillicone bimbo style of bottom left and right. Exaggerated proportions of all done stylistically is great since you can capture more character using it in just a look rather than having to conform to realistic standards.

V

Top right and bottom left are my favs

zach

Me personally I want wild and exaggerated! I want full on cartoon! If I want realism, I can do what I always do and go outside.

James Mikhail

I would pay good money to learn your rendering/coloring technique. It’s the best in the game!

Obie The Creator

So intressting to learn about your start and tools and techniques , pls more and your fantastic cartoons of course

Danne Danne

I feel that, wasn't until a two years ago I learn that they were different people. I used to wonder how did John go from really crap to heart attack practically over night and why he continued to make the bad ones

MagneticEntanglement

Atake

Agreed, idk even know how John is still around. He Definitely doesn't deserve any of the fame and theft of it from pit 😤

MagneticEntanglement

It's great seeing this from you. Thank you for creating it, it gives us a lot of insight into the type of person that we're supporting. It feels great. You've come a long way, and what John did to you is unacceptable. You're a strong person for taking the chance, and now you have supporters and fans that will always be there for you. Thank you, Pit.

Killa

So you'd say less realistic rendering. More cartoon style line work, proportion you'd go either way on whether it's realistic or exaggerated? You can also use MS paint. Doesn't have to be photoshop.

Pit-erotic

Wish I had a photoshop to participate, but I will say from your graph, the top and bottom on the left has been your best and iconic design in my opinion.
