Let's all get ready to strike a nice pose this Holiday season.
This is more of an intermediate/advanced one, just a heads up!
Left Hand Pro Tips:
Everything up until the very last measure is in the 10th position. This means that your first finger is going to play any notes on the 10th fret, your second finger covers the 11th, your third the 12th, and your fourth the 13th.
The only exception to the previous note is at the end of measure 6. There's now a 14th fret! For the final 3 notes of this measure, you'll temporary shift your hand to the 11th position, and these last 3 notes (frets 12, 13, and 14) are played with your second, third, and fourth fingers.
Right Hand Pro Tips:
The right hand plays a repetitive groove which looks like this:
| D D U D U D D D U D U D |
D = Downstroke
U = Upstroke
| = Barlines
The spacing of the strokes above should give you a sense of the timing. The downstrokes with a longer space after them are double the lengths of the ones closer together.
To break this down even more rhythmically, I've written below exactly how this fits into the measure:
1 e & a 2 e & a 3 e & a 4 e & a
d d u d u d d d u d u d
1 e & a represent all the possible subdivisions of the beat, since we're counting 16th notes.
All of these pick strokes are indicated in the attached TAB as well. In the TAB, downstrokes looks like a table, and upstrokes look like a V.
There's a big scale run in the last measure. You'll alternate your pick strokes for the entire thing. You can go insanely slow with this part. Focus on accuracy, not speed. Let speed come to you naturally over time as you become more comfortable and confident.
Theory:
This entire part exists in an F mixolydian scale. This is a major scale, but with a b7. So if F major looks like this:
F G A Bb C D E [F]
w w h w w w h
Then F mixolydian will look like this:
F G A Bb C D Eb [F]
w w h w w h w
This is a good scale for funk stuff. It might just be the funkiest scale there is.
In the last measure, we switch to an F dorian scale for that big scale run. It looks like this:
F G Ab Bb C D Eb [F]
w h w w w h w
Dorian is kind of like, a jazzy scale if you will.
TAB is attached as a Guitar Pro file and a PDF.
And that's all for now. Peace out, my sweet holiday Tup Tups!
