Makin' A Move (Verse)

Greetings - it's funk time! Play this Nile Rodgers inspired part right, and all disco balls in a 1 mile radius will start spinning.

Pro Tips:

- For each chord, Barre your first finger across the strings and hammer the notes on during the first strum. This gives each chord a nice little flourish at the start.

- Lift pressure off the chord and keep strumming with your right hand to get that classic 'wikki-chikka' sound. The exact pattern I play with the right hand and the left hand is somewhat random and is a bit different every time, but I've put the typical rhythm of the accents in the TAB.

- If you want to keep things easier, don't worry about the rhythm stuff and just focus on letting the chords ring out in one big glorious strum. There's a lot to learn here just by memorizing the chord shapes. These are all examples of 7th chords which are the most popular chords in genres like jazz, funk, soul, R&B.

Theory Talk:

The chords are:

Bmin7 - F#min7 - Emin7

Bmin7 - F#min7 - Emin7

Bmin7 - F#min7 - Emin7

Bmin7 - Gmaj7 - G/A

Each chord is derived from the B minor scale.

TAB is attached as a Guitar Pro file and a PDF. Enjoy!

Yes please! :)

Thanks! I know exactly what you mean by the 'twang'!

Keep practicing and trying your best, it's only a matter of time before you can beat me in a guitar duel!

Hatt Dang. Dat. Twang in the chikki-wikkas indeed! This is some truly funky, tropical beach-y, riftin' Phobo'Cop! πŸ’• Superb stuff as always! (getting me a heckin' excited to have my axe paid off and have a play) ..though it might be a while before i can get it to sing as you do ^^;

I'd like to argue that it's never too early for wikki-chikkas. I really like how some of the notes "twang" here (forgive me, I never took music theory and it's been years since I was in concert band...)

I'm still rather new to your music, so this is a good reminder to go listen to your older albums.

Good question! We're really just trying to strike a balance between repetitive elements and ones that are zany and all over the place. Not a ton of thinking goes into writing our parts... we more often listen and use our ears to feel out what the song needs.

Actually, it might be that way in the studio recording. I usually play stuff off of memory, so the older the track the more it's slowly changed over time when we play it live.

Thanks Phillip! Keep it funky!

It's a bit of both. Persistence is key, but also look out for ways you could play it more efficiently. Make sure your fingers and thumb are positioned in the most optimal way to play the chord. Sometimes, moving your thumb around a little bit will help reposition all your fingers in a way that makes the chord way easier. Hope this helps!

This Patreon has me thinking...You have a very methodical approach to your guitar that seems very tight and controlled, meanwhile Meech never plays the same way twice. Its like the difference between thinking it out and feeling it out. And your combined prowess makes for the best fuckin wire choir in the business. Would you say thats accurate? (Sorry for cursing)

Ooo i was pretty close on this one! I had thought that it was played as groups of four sixteenth notes. Didn't know there was all this funky rhythm going on!

The funk meter is off the charts with this one! Thanks Lord Phobos!

Cool! I was actually trying to learn the B major chord last night, but I couldn't push down hard enough for a barre chord. Any tips on improving that, or will it just come with time?

Oh, early one! Nice thing to wake up to :) So admittedly I've barely ever touched a guitar, I'm just here because I like what you're doing and it's interesting to read/watch, but at least some of it seems to be sinking in? I listened to one of my old favorite songs recently and went "huh, the guitar part is doing something--interesting there!" Not that I have the words to articulate how it was interesting yet, but we'll see what happens in the future!
