Hey guys you might have noticed that I have a few very specific tastes when it comes to mainstream media. When it's not Sailor Moon, it's He-Man.
And since the movies are going to be released in two days on Netflix and the transformation sequence in the trailer is very reminiscent of a magical girl transformation, I decided to honor this stylistic choice.
And I hope it's not casual and it's there to tell the viewer that the writer is aware of the queer charm of the original and that spirit has to be preserved like She-Ra did with its reboot.
Because, yeah, the reboot of She-Ra made a lot of homophobes lose their shit, shouting that it never was the spirit of OG She-Ra, even if that cartoon has been queer as the 80s censorship and corporate mandates let it to be.
But I'm scared this time, because the writer is Kevin Smith, not quite famous for his progressive themes, and because the He-Man franchise is not so exclusively defined by the campy 80s cartoon. There have been a movie, the 90s, and the early 2000s cartoon, plus a bunch of comics that someone might have read.
Let's say that the fame of He-Man comes 90% from the 80s cartoon, instead of the 99% of She-Ra, so the slice of fans enthralled with a heteronormative interpretation of He-Man is not that negligible.
I cross my fingers that this time Kevin Smith had consulted with some more queer-aligned colleague that made him realize that the only way to honor the campy charm of the original is not copying the aesthetics and tone, but to escalate, do what in the 80s Filmation, the gayest place in town, just couldn't do.
Oh yeah, I know that I have yet to post Celebrity Bangmatch, it's almost done. With the summer I slowed down the pace, because I'm working on some animations, and also I'm cutting away some time to walk, swim and stop looking like the hairy version of the Ghostbusters logo. I will adjust to the new schedule, and I feel like more rest is making my art better. Don't you think?
