Hello Jak and Daxter fans, thank you for supporting MinnMax! It's time to submit your comment on the first section of Jak and Daxter 1! For the first discussion, we're covering everything in the game up until you get to Rock Village. Please don't spoil anything after that point in the comments!
Submit one comment below and please get specific. Don't write a long review, please keep your one comment to around the length of a tweet. I repeat: please keep your one comment to around the length of a tweet. We want to get to as many comments as possible. Let's get specific, submit a comment about your favorite enemy design, NPC, line of dialogue from Daxter, animation, etc. The more specific you are, the higher the odds of us reading your comment during the discussion. We'll finish collecting comments on Thursday morning.
We're recording The Deepest Dive on Jak and Daxter on Thursday at 11am Central, and you can watch us record it live on MinnMax's Twitch channel.
You can unlock the podcast version of the discussion in your favorite podcast app by supporting MinnMax at the $5 tier.

Definitely one of my favorite games as a kid. All of the Pov animations of Daxter talking to Jak after he dies are burned into my memory. I can't find any record of it, but I remember hearing about the game through a short-lived video game segment on Disney channel where they would review games. Does anyone else remember this?

2022-07-14 16:57:35 +0000 UTCWhat in the world is going on with the frame rate on the PS5? It chugs during cutscenes, when I'm on the hover bike, when there's a lot of enemies on screen, and when I transition between areas. I'll finish this version because I'm already so far in, but I wish I had just emulated it on my PC.

2022-07-14 16:56:36 +0000 UTCThe finishing mini game was what forced me to learn to use the joystick instead of the d-pad
2022-07-14 16:24:24 +0000 UTCThe boat ride between Sandover Village and Misty Island that hides the background loading and smoothly transitions to the next area was incredibly impressive from a technical game design standpoint (along with the seamless exploration of other areas on the island). We poke fun at developers for frequent use of the "pushing through a narrow corridor while the games unloads/loads assets" trick nowadays, but as a first-time player I was extremely impressed to see this technique used in back in 2001.
2022-07-14 14:36:04 +0000 UTCOne small annoyance, the green orbs don't suck into the character like most modern games like the new Ratchet and Clank so I am constantly having to turn around to pick them all up. Not a huge deal but you can tell why it has changed in most games after Jak and Dax.

2022-07-14 13:57:49 +0000 UTCWhat's going on with that spin attack? I never really payed attention to it before, but the animation on it seems so bizarre. It looks like Jak is doing a kind of a one legged Russian dance, posting up on one leg and swinging around his other leg to attack and (more importantly) swinging Daxter around himself to be the big hit box. Everyone talks about Yoshi being the brunt of platforming abuse in Super Mario World, but our poor pal Daxter is being used like a nunchuk in this attack womping into enemies. Just something to be mindful about next time you have to choose between the punch or the spin attack.

2022-07-14 12:18:17 +0000 UTCI explored Sandover Village and The Forbidden Jungle for quite a while before actually talking to any of the people in town. Giving players the option to explore without being forced to talk to an NPC to progress is great game design.
2022-07-14 11:56:03 +0000 UTCI have never played this game before and I am genuinely surprised at the difficulty. It seems very well balanced. Not too hard, but not too easy either. I got all the power cells in this part of the game without it taking too long.
