Star Wars Outlaws - HDR Optimized Settings

The game is NOT using/applying Xbox, Playstation or PC HDR Calibration app settings.

The game on paper has a good HDR implementation as it offers in-game Peak HDR Luminance controls (in nits value) which can go up to 10.000 nits, along with additional picture controls.

But there are issues when actually configuring/playing it, so it could be better...

First of all: the game suffers from slightly elevated black levels which can not be fixed by adjusting in-game settings so you can decide to just live with it or to further lower the FTDA setting on your TV by extra -2/-4 points (but remember to set it back to what it was for other games).

Secondly, the "HDR Peak" setting you set doesn't exactly correspond to actual max HDR luminance you'll get in-game so, usually, you need to set it 200 nits higher in the slider to actually match it in-game. -> FIXED AFTER PATCH 1.1.2

So, in the end:

If you have an LG OLED and:

> you're using Dynamic Tone Mapping or Dynamic Contrast:

> you're using HGIG:

If you don't have an LG OLED and:

> you don't have an HGIG option:

> you're using HGIG:

In all cases, you can leave regular Brightness to 0 and HDR UI Peak to 100, as they already represent balanced values.

Enjoy :)

So, I have some questions here (know it’s been awhile since the game has released). You say the game has a peak of 10,000 nits but it appears it only goes up to 5,000; with that I just wanted to make sure what you recommend for G3 (w/ HGIG) is accurate; there’s no way to select 1,500 as it increases in increments of 200 (0, 200, 400, 600, etc.). Right now I have it set to 1,600. Additionally, since using ColorControl, I’ve noticed lowering the brightness down to -10 gets that left image to barely visible nicely and may mitigate the raised black levels without having to fine tune dark areas in Game Optimizer settings. Curious to see if you agree

KNasty

I think 200 should be fine

P40L0

HDR UI Peak is default at 400, should it be lowered to 100?

David Soto

I fixed it using this https://www.nexusmods.com/starwarsoutlaws/mods/15?tab=description maybe add it to the bonus section as it turns off depth of field, lens distortion, chromatic aberration etc completely as in game there is no off only low.

https://www.reddit.com/r/StarWarsOutlaws/comments/1f2y0xw/dlss_is_a_blurry_mess/ Apparently if this game and I could believe it as my cyberpunk and outcast a new beginning still look great and that game is aa.

haris mohammad

Don't know then. Other games with DLSS 3.7.20 + Preset E look crisp as fuck :D

P40L0

Lol nope as cinematic effects at low, depth of field low, motion blur off sorry brother XD.

haris mohammad

Ok, then the blurriness is caused by the "cinematic effects" they added to the game at max quality. It's intended

P40L0

Yep latest and your preset E but still blurry even at 4k Max and quality. Maybe a bad implementation of dlss? Also fixed or biased settings in dlss?

haris mohammad

HDR is still better than SDR in this game. For DLSS swap its .dll's to latest and use Preset E via NVIDIA Profile Inspector

P40L0

Hdr looks so ass in this game, so grey white and dull. You recommend using hdr or wait for more updates, what looks better to you? Also some reason dlss looks blurry as hell even when updated and running at 4k Ultra, might just be Ubisoft games as they're not really lookers in my opinion.

haris mohammad

I've changed them once, but then the same

P40L0

There's been a few more updates so still same settings?

haris mohammad

I rectify: black level is still deliberately raised, but now Peak HDR Luminance you set in-game actually corresponds to the peak while playing. I updated the post ;)

P40L0

Nope

P40L0

Have the recommendations changed at all as a result of the latest patch?

Zebra Matt

Could be 40fps mode requirea 120hz so the banding. If you only game on the console try PC Mode + 4:4:4 Pass Through enabled, those will reduce it.

P40L0

I've discovered it's only on the 40fps mode, 30 and 60fps no banding

David Soto

same problem :( sdr it's ok

Romain Nalem

I've noticed a lot of banding in the sky in HDR :(

David Soto

Awesome! Thanks for the optimized settings :)
