However, Wes is completely right that they rushed into this without enough planning. It was good of him to catch the "mystic safeguards" issue, but they still made multiple errors. And not merely because they should have done "synchronize your watches" before they left. • How do they not even think about a conventional alarm? Not only did Buffy apparently trip a pressure sensor, but there could have been a laser aimed at a receptor pad (and the moment you interrupt that contact, you trip the alarm) or there could even be a simple wire alarm attached. Or the skylight could have been alarmed, for that matter. • Maybe you actually PRACTICE with the winch so that the cable doesn't jam? I mean, Angel literally has all day to learn his equipment. Just saying. • Not only do they make the brilliant decision to send Willow (not quite a combat stud) unescorted down the side of the building (with vampires and Faith around), but she's also the first one UP the ladder, too. What if there had been guards on the roof? (A not-unreasonable possibility.). Next time, why don't we let the Slayer take the lead when heading into unfamiliar territory? Just a thought. I grant you, Buffy probably enjoyed getting a chance to check out Willow's butt. But there's a time and a place for that…and this is not it. Mind on the job, Buff.

I pretty much always adore Wesley (like you, Darcie, I make the "W-for-Watchers-Council" finger-sign when he does), but he's clearly in the wrong here…for multiple reasons: 1. Buffy only got her information from a single source. Even journalism requires two. How does she know the vampire wasn't lying to her? Vamps do that, you know. 1B-1C. How does she know the Mayor told this flunky all the details? How does she know the flunky remembered everything correctly? Needing corroboration, guys. 2. Willow is a unique resource; to quote Buffy, "there aren't two of her in the world. (Well, except for three episodes ago, but that was another dimension and she's gone now. [Dust, in fact, but Buffy doesn't know that part.]). How does Buffy know the Mayor can't simply order a replacement Box from evilBay or wherever he got this one? I mean, the airport still works. The Mayor still has money. (Indeed, he has the exact same money, due to Faith's…unique negotiating skills. But again, Buffy doesn't know that part,). Be pretty stupid to let Willow die and then have the Mayor find a replacement Box next week. 3. Willow is useful to the team. She works the computer, she does research, she can cast spells. She may not be irreplaceable on any single task, but she has the widest skillset in the group. 4. Willow is key to keeping the group balanced. When Giles is being "Mr. Caution Man", she can get him to give Buffy necessary slack. When Xander is letting his emotions drive his actions, Willow can rein him in. And… 4B. …Willow is particularly necessary to Buffy's emotional health. It's very easy for Slayers to get burnt out and depressed. (I personally feel the primary reason for the Cruiciamentum is to give Slayers who are looking for an excuse to lay down on the job and die a way to do that without getting civilians hurt. "Oh, no! My powers are gone! I'm HELPLESS! Goodbye world!"). Willow is Buffy's primary connection to the world, her touchstone for humanity. As Buffy herself said in "The Wish", Willow and Xander are how she's able to deal with all of this without getting lost in it. "I need you guys". Case closed.
