Art for No One

Here it is, literally the longest and in many ways the "biggest" video I've ever made. I hope you enjoy.

Good suggestion! I find the pace and semi-scattered rhythm of the discord difficult to have a more structured conversation

Stefano

Maybe the subreddit?

Ian Zeringue

Thanks for the suggestion! I checked it out. Not super acquainted with how discord functions!

Stefano

Usually the discord, which you should have access to as a patron, is pretty lively!

Quick question to the community, where is the best place to have a discussion about the topics in the video? Cause o boi I’m rrready for it!

Stefano

Got the book today, got the Patreon today, finished the video today (and I as well pumped my fist in excitement repeatedly). What a good day! Long time fan, but recent financially stable adult. Happy to finally be able to support. I just wanted to thank you for the stellar work you do. Thanks for so masterfully putting into words (and video) this and many other topics (and thanks for all the juicy new artsy references).

Goya, is it made with the hand of god? Or is it cake?

I somehow made it this far without hearing about The Beginners Guide. Knowing the theme of the video I should have seen it coming but the reveal of Codas desires to not have his work shared hit me so hard I had to take a break. Whether Coda was a real person or not I feel the betrayal of some ones trust like that definitely adds an extra layer of pain and heartbreak that some of the other pieces discussed just don't have as much of. Fantastic video, I cant wait 'til your book drops.

Not only was this the most captivating essay you've made with a constant stream of insight in your writing, but it is also the only essay I've seen that made me physically jump out of my chair and pump my fist from excitement. Your video on artificial loneliness introduced me to Aristotle Roufanis' body of work, and he immediately became my favorite photographer, and now Elena Helfrecht might be up there as well. Also, I know you hesitated to write about The Beginner's Guide until you felt you could do it justice, and I think this was the perfect place for it if there ever was one. Is this essay going to be in How a Game Lives? I don't know enough about book publishing to know when the text gets locked before prints, but I'd assume this essay would be one you'd want included.

I saw Goya's Black Paintings in Madrid last year. I tried to stare into Saturn's eyes as long as I could... The Garden of Earthly Delights was there too, and many more! (Museo Nacional del Prado)

I just watched the video, and I feel so conflicted. On the one hand, artists have freedom, and the right to create as they see fit, and the works of their hands and hearts are theirs and theirs alone. But on the other, something inside me demands that art speak to the world. I cannot shake the feeling that art, if it is to be called art at all, is something that should belong to humanity. My heart is disturbed, and even enraged, at the idea of beautiful or clever things locked away on purpose. Like the artist has cut out their own tongue. It is a mutilation of what my soul tells me art is for: to leave a piece of yourself outside of yourself, to speak for you before the endless altered people who come after.

Ok, well, that’s tonight’s plans sorted!

Lovely video! "You can't have art from no one" certainly feels very apt for current times. 🙂 How many years were you in the lottery drawing for seeing City before you won??
