With Orochimaru the 3rd hokage started him down that path, you could say, by telling him that he could see his patents again. Orochimaru interpreted that as you can bring them back to life. Nawaki, Tsunade's brother, was Orochimaru's student and he felt responsible for his death so he then became more fixated on bringing people from the dead and ofcourse seeing Tsunade's turmoil again with her lover Dan worsened Orochimaru's predicament. It then became his desire to keep Anko safe and strong, but the final nail in the coffin was seeing the greatness of Itachi that truly drove him to who he became.

I will never understand Hiruzen letting Orochimaru go after he found him in his lab, especially knowing he killed people and even killed 2 anbu right in front of him! Sasuke saying ‘any jutsu you use will have no effect before these eyes’ probably brought back all kinds of serious flashbacks for Orochimaru ! This was the point when I knew Naruto was something special because they started tying things together from the very first arc. The world building in Naruto is incredible. Even showing Nawaki and Dan's death again but from Orochimaru's perspective (this part was anime-only but it was relevant) does so much to add to the reason why he became what he became. The deaths of people around him (his parents, Nawaki, and Dan) made him realize that humans were fragile. It led to him wanting to find ways to become stronger until he ended up becoming fully obsessed with immortality and wanting to avoid death at all costs. Goes to show even someone like Orochimaru wasn't completely "evil" from the start. So Zabuza and Kisame were both members of the 7 Swordsman of the Mist. They were a shinobi group from the Hidden Mist village who would pass down their swords generation to generation. Suigetsu was a candidate for the next generation which is why he wanted to retrieve Zabuza's sword. With Zabuza dead, it rightfully belongs to him. In the manga, the sword was buried with Zabuza and left there. Sasuke and Suigetsu go to his grave and get the sword. No spoilers below just helping with understanding: To help understand the swords, mist village has a group called the “7 Swordsman of the Mist” as the name suggests, there are 7 members and each have a different sword. Kisame(Itachi’s partner) and Zabuza each have one, zabuza died so Suigetsu wanted his blade. That blade is called the Executioner Blade, but Kisame has not said his sword’s name yet I don’t believe. ENJOY!

Not confirming anything. When we saw Sasuke killed Orochimaru, they showed flashbacks of Orochimaru and also everyone who were related and close to Orochimaru and Sasuke. Blood red sun and red sky does symbolise renewal, rebirth, life, death and destruction. There is also the representation of the white snake getting stabbed by Orochimaru former student Anko who also has the curse mark. Ron was trippin at the part about the grey hair guy talking weird. That guy was just mumbling because he got scared of Sasuke and didn't dare to talk out loud to Sasuke's face. Can't wait for you to know more about Tobi and piercing guy.

Orochimaru is a thinker, philosopher and scientist, primarily driven by the desire to know more and master more. Not saying he doesn't have feelings at all but to me it's more so that the cruelty of war and fragility of human caused him to think about life, and ended up with twisted conclusion. Voldemort is definitely more evil imo, and has been evil since very early, but yeah they do have very similar desire and creepiness.

Orochimaru is based on Japanese mythology, and contains subtext of historical Japanese person(s). Kishimoto's influence for Naruto are outfront: Dragon Ball (1984), Akira (1982), Ninku (1993), Blade of the Immortal (1993).

The Zabuza callback really is a pretty awesome thing and really enriches the lore of the show. Makes you appreciate how powerful Zabuza really was way back in Naruto because we had nothing to compare him at that time. The only other swordsmen from that village we've seen are Sugeitsu and Kisame and they're both clearly deadly and badass. That being said, imagine what an "Oh fuck" moment it was for Kakashi when he rolls out with his squad on their first real mission and they bump into one of the Hidden Mist's swordsman and his buddy Haku.

Tobi's finally here! The GOAT, a weak but fun Akatsuki member. And wow, I forgot about the castle-thing filler to retrieve Zabuza's sword. In fact, the sword was still at the grave, no one ever took it (Chapter 347). LOL. Ron's ideas about fillers at the start discussion reminded me of how much I joked with friends about Studio Pierrot making fillers of certain "dreams" (if you know, you know). And THEY DID!
