It took me a second watch to realize what the Graf meant when he mentioned "the logical way" Aura dealt with those with the will strong enough to resist her after she took over them - every puppet she has now is headless. Also, during that scene in the past, the soldier shown being able to resist is the Graf's son. He wears the family necklace and carries the same sword. His necklace can be seen earlier in the episode, when Frieren mentions that she recognizes some of the armor. And yes, the music is fantastic.
