I can confirm that in both versions Frieza aimed for Goku, and that piccolo ran out in front of him calling out his name, taking the shot same as he did for Gohan when he died the first time on earth. You probably didn't hear it because Leo was talking, but it is 100% there.

This my 2nd time watching this reaction, and in the OG version piccolo just didn't get shot like how they edited it to look here.
