July Q&A

Greetings. This is the thread to submit the questions for the July Q&A. Post below.

Why has the series hybrid electric drive gone through so many abortive attempts at development? A motor-generator paired with a wheel motor at the back of each track seems to have many advantages, not the least of which should be simplicity and ease of maintenance. Lots of smart people who built tanks tried it at the prototype scale before giving up. Heavy rail the world over has been using this power layout almost exclusively since the 1950s. Is there some other issue getting in the way of adoption?

Adam Schindler

What is your opinion on the Merkava tank ? How do you think it compares to other MBTs in service ? And do you think the Merkava is a evolutionary dead end for tanks ? And as always thank you.

P43 is my pick!

Why wasn't M47 send to Korea? From 1951 to 1953 there was around 8500 built which is quite a lot for post ww2 tank. Was it because M47 was a stop-gap solution that combined T42 turret with modified M46 hull and there were problems with it? Anyway I think that M47 is often overlooked. It was primary tank of many european countries during 50's and 60's.

Some pictures have been released showing a side by side comparison of the front turret and Hull of the m1a2c and the Sep v2. Not the weight simulators. What is your best guess for armor increase of the M1A2c?

Calc adds flavour!!

Not sure if you can comment on this question generally or tank specific - either would be fine - but if you look at the cold war, NATO went for a quality vs quantity philosophy. This is exactly what the germans tried in WWII and it didn't work out too well. So were NATO just doing the only thing they could & ignoring past experience or was there some significant difference which led them to believe that it would work this time? Also if you look at the various post-war conflicts, how many of them support the NATO philosophy?

Andrew

Do you think there are any real strides so to speak to still be made in armour design or doctrine to significantly improve modern MBTs?

What are some examples of "tanks that could have been" that you feel maybe could have gone somewhere if more time/money/consideration/etc. had been given to see them go further? - Cipherhornet18

What tank doesn't exist to do a video on that you wish did?

Charles Sherrange

Second question (if we're allowed such a luxury!) - any plans down the line for more war stories? I find myself rewatching your Abrams video quite a lot, and it'd be lovely to hear more about your time in the Abrams. And by the way, is calcium carbonate buildup ever a problem with BVs?

Kazuki K.

how effective do you think the tortoise/t95 would have been at their roles if they were used ?

Ezio 896

When would you estimate (or if it has at all) the 'trade armor for speed' philosophy of the Leopard 1, AMX-30 and Type 61 among others began to fade away in deference to heavier frontal armor? - shrine maiden

Kazuki K.

Which would you value more as a tanker? Airsupport, Infantry Dupport, or Artillery Support, and in what environments ie: urban combat, forest, desert, etc. All of this being in WW2. Otherwise A10 with its various payload is a more obvious answer.

Due to the incident with the propane cylinder at Tank Fest this year, can we confirm this is in fact the Jingles Effect at work?
