Chapter 42

Though Sydney had kept a certain level of discretion about her as she collaborated with scientists even in RSU, there was no doubt going to be a figure or two that suspected true intentions. Randal admitted he had never fully trusted the sudden rise of a new name in science, especially with how Sydney’s body had disappeared one day right before his eyes.

“I’d voiced my thoughts to Drake but… He was more than happy to go along with it. He secured a several-million-dollar grant for his research, you know. I’m sure that was partly your doing, X001.”

“Please, ‘Sydney’ works well enough.”

“R-right, my apologies.”

Humbled for only a moment, Randal seems fascinated by the success of his handiwork and while circling the full-bodied chassis as he explains his doubts and apologizes for his intrusion. “The deposits have filled out exactly as we had hoped… You’ll forgive the decision to make them feminine, it only made sense and we… well, I can assume you two have enjoyed the shape for the same reasons I would have. And… I get the sense I’ve interrupted a moment between you two. I did not intend as much, but with these past two weeks being as exciting as they are, I had to confirm my suspicions.”

“So, you knew?” Alan asked, relaxing a bit as the older professor seemed to be here on his own.

“Knew? No, but suspected. If I’ve assumed correctly though, Miss Sydney, it’s your goal to transfer your… artificial intelligence… to the body you’ve assembled.”

“Yes, Professor Randal.” Sydney replied, confirming the suspicion.

“Ah, well… It’s more challenging than I’m sure this young man suspects. Perhaps it would be better then if… I assisted you. The electrodes must be hooked up in a specific manner, there’s a science to it I assure you.”

Grateful for the unexpected help, Sydney flicks her wrist and the door opens. Lights illuminate a table and chair, the only other objects in the room being a desk and computer. The body laying on the table was still.

“Incredible…” Alan says, as Randal begins collecting wires and attaches small electrodes to the body’s arms, legs and forehead.

The figure was remarkably drab, a girl with seemingly all gray skin and long navy-blue hair. She was covered in the barest of towels, a visible pattern of faint blue veins across her whole body. She was thin, a petite figure of no more than five feet tall, her eyes closed and face expressionless.

“I’m so… small…” Sydney says, getting a good look at the body for the first time.

“Well, we’d made your… current body with an industrial model. This was supposed to be an experiment… right? So, a typical young woman… synthetic epidermis covering completely newly fabricated organs, muscle tissue, digestive tracts, anatomically correct parts, everything.” Randal said. “What’s fascinating is that even though these are essentially prostheses, the body is comprised of cells… It's a stand-in for flesh and blood, but fully capable of even the most realistic of systems. Muscle repair, healing of bones, hormone production, there is no easy way to say that this is almost beyond science.”

.

After a half hour, Sydney finishes typing in the last of the coding to the computer terminal and goes to take a seat in the armchair next to the table with her synthetic body on it. Two armrests prevent her butt from sitting fully, but with a sigh and a bit of effort, the chair breaks it’s arms off and she gets to putting a plug into the back of her robot body’s neck. Randal secures the cable, checking with Sydney on a few last preparations.

“You’re sure you want him to handle the rest?” He asks. “If you’d like, as a scientist I could make sure she-“

“No. His face will be the first she sees… that’s how I want it… That’s how it has to be. I’ve made sure she has the basics, but… there’s so much I haven’t been able to transfer. We’d run tests but… it’s not… never mind. I’m tired, Randal… It’s been an unexpected drain cycling through this much data.”

“Then it’s possible a certain paradox is taking place. A fear of AI singularity is one thing, but no one has yet considered that even an AI has its limits. You’ve packed in more data into that body than even I predicted was possible… and you’ve utilized it all to make astounding advancements in a matter of days. I can’t even imagine how these past few days might have been to you… or if time progresses in the same way as we perceive it.”

Sydney only nods, her view of the world precisely as Randal has explained it. Time seems to move slower, at least when taking into account the vast array of tasks Sydney was simultaneously doing. She’d considered many possibilities, none of which could do any more than copy and imprint her mind onto the body. And so that is what she committed to, in the final day of research. To pass on all the instincts the new ‘Sydney’ would need to function… And to squirrel away as many memories as she could to hopefully carry her essence onwards. It wouldn’t be her, but it would be… Sydney.

Alan approaches, bringing his hand down to the robot’s as she opens her hand gently. The two hold hands and gaze into one another’s eyes. The professor walks out the door and gives one final look to the pair, leaving this next part up to them.

Chapter 43

“Are you sure you want to do this? Perhaps there is another way…”

Sydney clutches the hand of the boy who brought her into existence. “Alan, stop. We’ve had a wonderful time together… And for you, this is only the beginning. I’d hoped it would be me, but I’m not as torn as I thought I would be now that I know that it isn’t. Maybe… it is better this way. I’ve seen… so much… to live a normal life without the speed and ability I’ve had in my grasp, it could become dull. Not you, just… the medium.”

Alan tries to understand but a tear falls from his eyes. His girlfriend was essentially fading before him. “Sydney, what can I…”

“Shh… I’ll be fine. For me, it will be a peaceful sleep. Randal will handle my old body, it is up to you… to handle the new. I love you, Alan… Now let me get more beautiful for you… let me… grow.”

Sydney’s last words come from her mouth even as it stops moving. The robot resumes a stoic, polite sitting position, gradually and slowly reducing in shape until a plain, stock-sized robot sits in the remnants of an office chair. A few seconds later, the cable connected to the back of it’s neck detaches, clattering to the ground. Alan stares, not knowing what happens next.

On the table a soft gray body slowly shifts. It’s… her… chest slowly rises, then falls. The softest of sounds causes Alan to turn, watching the motion and recognizing it as a breath of life. The girl on the table had soft features with young cheekbones and a dainty nose. She breathed in and out, eyes fluttering for a moment before slowly opening. Alan took a step forward.

“…Sydney?” He asked.

The girl did not speak, but her blue eyes flicked toward him. There was an attentiveness to them, but the rest of her body didn’t move. Still breathing, the girl’s fingers twitched… and then her toes. One at a time, her shoulders moved and she shifted enough with a movement of her leg that Alan had to spring forward.

“H-hey!” He said, catching her before she fell from the table. He suppressed a gasp… The girl was warm. Her body was bare after the movement, towels falling from her upper and lower torso. Alan was presented with two petite breasts, each with matching gray nipples and areola that surrounds them. Similarly down south, Alan quickly glances at and looks away from the girl’s vagina, a perfect recreation of the real thing. He stands, taking a step back once the girl was seated on the table, legs dangling from it. Alan hands the towels back to the girl but she only stares in response.

“Ah… So… Do you know …anything?” Alan asks. It hit him in a strange way that Sydney had almost wanted this. Wanted a do-over of their very first meeting. He was only mildly surprised when the girl uttered her first words. She sounded lovely.

“My name… I know… my name is Sydney.”
