I do think that back in that episode in Season 1, Jinshi speculated about a switched-babies scenario, but dismissed it. I don't remember if it was because he had heard rumors or he had come up with it himself.

Jinshi wanted the emperor to make a new heir so that his role as next in line (since he is the current emperor's "brother") would get superceded by said heir. I know that scene can be confusing but to keep it short, Jinshi has no clue about his real parentage. As far as he knows, his real parents are the former emperor and the empress dowager. If he knew, he would also realize that even if the current emperor bore another son, he will still be first in line.

The old man suggests adding Maomao to the bloodline, then gives the warning, the emperor says he's aware, then the old man redirects his warning at Jinshi
