I saw this in the theater when I was 13. That was the moment I became a Jennifer fan. I was in love ha. Then when I was 16 I saw her in the Rocketeer and then Career Opportunities on HBO. But she sure made a heck of a career for herself. She's about perfect in everything she's done. And Bowie at the time I was not a fan, as i didn't really hear any of his music previously. But I became a fan because of this. And I had read what intrigued him or the role was that Henson pretty much gave him the freedom to write the songs etc. And he wanted to do a film w/ music that would appeal to children and adults. And he said he thought the script was really appealing, it wasn't vicious, bloody or spiteful which in the 80's a lot of films had that. And he loved the heart in it. Henson said Connolly wasn't even on the radar for this he was going to cast either Ally Sheedy or Jane Krakowki, then he saw Jennifers audition tape and he cast her immediately. He loved that she had that look and act like of a young girl growing up into womanhood. which is what this film is about is leaving the childhood behind for more responsibilities of adult hood. My kids love this film and sing Bowie's songs a lot, which is cool.
