I saw this in the theater when it came out and my town back then was on a reservation, Michael Blake the writer of this was there for that screening. I remember everyone really enjoying this. And he did a little Q&A afterwards, my friends and I were in high school, so like an idiot didn't really stick around, I wish i would have. I think Costner did a great job with this, I think he did an amazing job with Horizon pt1, saw that in a theater as well. I was raised in Apache country and Horizon involves a lot of Apache. Yes Dances cleaned house at the Oscars that year. Won Oscars for Best Sound, Best Score, Best editing, best cinematography, best screen play, best director and best picture. Costner, Graham Green (kicking bird) and Mary McDonnel (Stands) all were nominated for best actor/supporting. Costner knows how to make beautiful films. One thing that generally gets overlooked or missed is near the end, not only does John speak Sioux but Kicking Bird learned to speak English. That relationship between them was written beautifully.
