Pistol Training After a Long Break From the Range

Hello Tier II and Tier III,

I hope you are all having a great week so far.

In this video I cover a drill I do to identify and fix my mistakes after a long break from the range.

This is part one of training that will be coming out each week this month. Hopefully it will help you make the most of the ammo for future training sessions.

Diagnose my shooting in the comments below. The next 3 training videos for this process are already filmed but I want to see if you are picking up on the issues.

Ammo is finally coming back at more reasonable prices and most of us will be returning to the range more often this year. This month's training videos should help shake the rust off.

Cheers!

Video no longer plays. Same w/ John Wick one.

All good, more on how to eliminate the issues coming at you on Monday.

Shawn

Anticipation is often the culprit. How to get rid of it is next Monday's lesson. Dryfire is your friend.

Shawn

Been there man. Having a plan when you hit the range to improve on something is really important for progression. Otherwise it's like running in circles.

Shawn

Thanks man! Getting there. Always good to diagnose and refine when coming back from a break.

Shawn

I failed in attempting to pinpoint your fuck ups. I was too busy taking notes during the vid.

Bro. Morris

Oh man, I’ve been so busy, I probably haven’t shot more than 100 rounds in the first half of the year. I saw grip and anticipation as your main issues. I’m sure those will be in my list too. Hopefully I can carve out some time later this week to put some rounds down range. What’s the easiest way to clear away the cobwebs? Slow it down even more? Dry fire?

Derek Ferguson

Love these types of videos. It helps me reset and go back to fundamentals. I have been in a rut lately where I was shooting but without purpose. It almost was a chore but I wanted to keep my skills up. Next range session I plan to film myself and load some snap caps. Almost nervous to watch myself, but growth is about pushing through the awkward and uncomfortable. Cheers.

Brett Benefield

Fun exercise Shawn, the 1st 2 looked great but you definitely inhaled afterwards. The 2nd group the grip looked good and didn’t really see any anticipation,,,,,,clearing the malfunction was tight. 3rd group “agreed” anticipated a bit. 4th you pointed out your mistake. 5th definitely anticipated,,, Drawl looked good. I’ll give you a 6 out of 10 so you have 4 points of unfuckery to straighten out!!! 😂🇺🇸👊🏼

brian houck

Possibly. I'll have to review!

Shawn

We’re you bringing your head to the gun? It looked like you were a couple times

Brandon Miller

The electronic earmuffs are pretty good these days.

Shawn

Hi, thanks for the vid. What kind of hearing protection is best for situational awareness?

Josh Jennings

Could be. You get extra points for film analysis! 🙌🏼

Shawn

Thanks man. Videos on how I fix it are filmed and will be coming out each week.

Shawn

🤣Thanks man! 😎Instinctual malfunction drills take lots of practice before they become natural. I'll do one on rifle failures.

Shawn

I’m no expert but when I watched the vid in slow motion it appears that you are gripping your right hand to tight and your left hand pressure is a little inconsistent IMHO.

Scott Lantz

Impressive, overall. I did notice the last anticipation, but it didn’t look nearly as terrible as it does when I do it. Besides thousands of rounds on the range, how can you really work on correcting that? Dry fire drills? It’s like telling someone who hunts once a year NOT to get buck fever when he sees a monster through his leupold...

Dave Bell

Hey, first thing Shawn, you look really fucking cool, so you can rest easy. Before you even mentioned it, I was TOTALLY impressed with you clearing that dummy “malfunction”. Holy shit, man, I can’t imagine that the teams or the agency provided that much bad ammo in the field. That’s obviously been worked on in training once or twice, including checking the seat / reseating the mag before clearing the dummy. Do you do that with rifles as well?
