2020-06-06 12:48:46 +0000 UTCI'm making the assumption that the reason the writer chose to add Hanks line about considering the laptop likely useless, combined with them choosing to make Walt's actions lead directly to them discovering the bank accounts were somehow intentionally done like that by the writers. Or are you suggesting that it wouldn't have been in Mike and Jesse's best interests to get out of town in S5 E1 as Mike was suggesting rather than try and 'cover their tracks' with the magnet stunt? ;)

That's the thing about this show, it's all one long and complicated string of cause and effect. You can always look at one specific moment as a catalyst but there are always 10 things that lead to it and 10 worse things it causes.

The laptop was encrypted and Hank had already looked and decided he'd likely get nothing from it. However due to the destruction in the evidence room one of Gus' photos slipped in the frame to reveal Caymen Islands bank info. That was the reason the hazard pay got found. Everything falling apart started with that.
