Community College Hijinks #012

Here's the early preview of strip #012! I'll post it elsewhere next week. (DG seems to win these showdowns, doesn't she?)

Gloves and I are trying to figure out how, or if, to proceed with the "Hijinks" web strip, and so I figured I would ask your opinions!

Much of it boils down to economics. I need to pay Gloves to draw the strips. I absolutely adore them (so much), and I love working with Gloves in designing/writing them. But ultimately, I don't know what to "do" with the strip.

I know most folks view the strip as just a fun little side thing that takes like 5 seconds to read, and yes it is that, but I need to figure out a way to at least break even on the strip in the long-term, and I'm not really sure there is a way to do that. I know most web comics remain free during their runs and that the creators try to spin off side products and might do things like books or collections (but that only works after you have a LOT of material).

So I toss the question to you folks, what should I do with "Hijinks?"

I really appreciate you thinking about it! The $6 tier has some merit, but I'd have to convert a lot of people over from $5 to $6, and that would be tough. A lot of people just have this on "set it and forget it," which I appreciate, but it means they don't really look at the level very often, if at all...

It really is a question of economics, mainly what's your break even point? How much does it cost you to produce one? I'm not looking for an answer, but how large that number is plays into your descision a fair bit I think. For instance, your highest real tier, since quickie is going away, is 5 dollars. Would it be enough to keep the 6 dollar tier and use that extra dollar to help fund hijinks? Maybe give some votes in future strips and such for that tier, or some special downloads or something. I know I'd gladdly chip in an extra dollar. That may not have the numbers, though, but something like it could be possible. The idea of a compilation is awesome, of course, but that definitely needs more strips. A very possible future product though.

It would be something to consider if/when I get to full time "Creative" status, that's for sure, but not something I can juggle until then.

Create a different story in a parallel/alternate universe where the main character didn't exist and the hijinks that ensues from there? Could even be a serious story but not sure if that's too much of a workload for you.
