Hello everyone!
Happy 2023! With the new year upon us, we're excited to tell you about the plans we have for our patreon in 2023. We hope you’ve enjoyed the smaller quest packs we’ve published recently, as well as the train heist one shot, but we think it’s about time we return to a bigger project. But first, we have to talk about Dungeons & Dragons.
The Open Game License (OGL)
A lot of the content we’ve published here was made to be compatible with Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition under the Open Game License. This license allowed anyone to publish material compatible with the game so long as they stick to a few provisions. That arrangement has served us very well, and we’ve been happy to publish using it.
Earlier this month, a proposed new license leaked to the press. This license would have introduced new restrictions that we wouldn’t have felt comfortable accepting, and if this license were to come into effect it would’ve meant we would have to change how we publish our stories and campaigns. However, the D&D community rallied successfully against these changes and through collective action forced Wizards of the Coast to relent. Thank you to everyone who raised their voices and added to this discourse on the OGL in January - the result of your efforts made a gigantic and positive difference to independent creators like us.
As a result, the core rules of Dungeons & Dragons 5.1 have now been re-released under a Creative Commons license, which guarantees we can continue to publish 5e compatible content.
This has been a wild and uncertain time for us. With the move to Creative Commons we feel confident and secure in our ability to create 5e content, but we are also looking to expand our horizons to other game systems; even develop our own 😉.
We are going to continue publishing 5e content. We’ve got a number of projects coming up that we’re very excited about that explore new areas of the world of Hemelin and revisiting (improving) places we know.
The Forgotten God Book
We’ve been working on developing a book of our Forgotten God adventure, but have had trouble finding time while also creating Quest Packs and new products for the r-n-w store.
To help us create space to work on the compilation, we’re going to release a number of new Quest Packs for the Forgotten God adventure that feature new content or re-writes for this book.
The first one of these will be released next week: The Bog Broth Arena! We plan to eventually fund this book via Kickstarter, and a version of it will also be released on Patreon.
The next big campaign project: Tova’s Legacy
Our third campaign will take place in Dragonspring and the realms below. We don’t want to reveal too much about the plot before we’ve run a playtest, but we’ll tell you one thing: The player characters will end up being responsible for a dragon egg and the baby that will hatch from it!
(We originally pitched Tova's Legacy in 2019)
To begin this new campaign, we’re going to start with creating…
The Traveller’s Guide to Dragonspring and the Realms Below.
We’ll visit the hoard-citadel of Dragonspring, the mines that feed its hunger for wealth, and the vast underground realms below it. We will publish a new Traveller’s Guide that explores all that the Dragonspring region has to offer in terms of flora, fauna, locations, activities and culture, to create a fleshed out campaign setting before we begin the exciting story of Tova’s Legacy.
ReQuest Packs
We also intend to keep making content by request. Some of our most beloved supplements (like the Traveller’s Guide to the Soddenweald and Forgotten Familiars) have come from your and other patrons’ ideas. We enjoy being able to work with you all, and want to continue doing so!
While 5th edition will be our focus for patreon for the foreseeable future, we’d like to start investing more effort into other games. This will mostly be done through the r-n-w store; expect to see things like character sheets for Pathfinder 2nd edition this year!
We believe good game design takes time; as much time as it needs. When we feel confident about sharing more about either of these projects, you – our patrons – will be the first to hear about it <3
Thank you
Thank you so much for supporting us on patreon, and chatting with us on our discord server. Your kind words and enthusiastic support give us the confidence that we’ll be able to keep making fun games for everyone.
We hope this post has given you a clear idea of where we want to take our content this year. If you have any concerns, suggestions or encouragements, please let us know in the comments below or by talking to us on the discord.
Cheers,
- Niels & Rose
