Why I Love Sea Turtles (Sea Turtles are AMAZING) - Smarter Every Day 239

This is one of those videos that I feel comfortable totally going to the next level because of your awesome support on Patreon.  I filmed this video over an incredibly long time, then I "saved" the footage until the moment was right.  Well, the "right" moment came in the form of an endangered Kemp's Ridley sea turtle!

I'm grateful for your support.  I do not have all the answers, but I'm grateful that you give me the freedom to go on a journey of discovery and share what I learn with others.  You're the real MVP.

A special thanks to:

I love sea turtles and everything about the ocean! Just watched a great documentary on Netflix called my octopus teacher that made me look at them in a whole new way. The health of the ocean is very important. I'm so glad you have the freedom to do videos like this as well 😊 me and my family love all of your videos and I hope to be able to support your dreams and goals more in the future.

emily julie wise.

Things I now know are amazing: Cornses, laminar flow, underwater lasers, and now sea turtles.

Great video! After living in both Nicaragua and Costa Rica for a year a piece, I feel now more than ever the sea turtle struggle is real. In both of those countries, there is a huge amount of attention given to sea turtles. However in that attention, there is also a battle between those who carry on a tradition of harvesting sea turtle eggs for food (illegal) , and a passion for the preservation of the species. This one hit home for me. I’ve had the opportunity to release sea turtles by hand, and it’s very impactful to think about the long life you may be setting free. Well done Destin!

This is a superb video. In depth studies of God's creatures invariably yields fascinating understanding. Thanks for the truly interesting vids.

Destin, My name is Corey and I have been watching your content for years. You are my favorite YouTuber by far. I am a Padi Master Instructor in Maui. If you ever get out this way I can take you to places where we can see plenty of green sea turtles in the wild. We ever get an occasional hawksbill. Each year we have a group of Hawksbills that lay their eggs here and I am part of an organization that watches over the nests until they hatch. The Green Sea turtles are very intelligent. I have had several that have gotten entangled in fishing line swim right up to me and stop so that I can untangle them. They realize the advantage of opposing thumbs and cutting tools... lol. Anyway if you would like some great pics or video, just let me know. And keep the super cool content coming! Coreymahjoubian@gmail.com

Great video. If you love sea turtles, you simply must learn about Cumberland Island's resident expert Carol Ruckdeschel. She has dedicated her life to the study and preservation of turtles. Her nearest neighbors are the founding family of the Coca-Cola corp and descendants of the Carnegies. Cumberland Island is a unique place and has a fascinating history. Carol has made her life's work to protect the ecology there. There are several books written about her and her accomplishments. I can introduce you to a personal friend of hers and a knowledgeable historian regarding the island if you have the time and are interested. I think you might find the latest threat to the Island's continued pristine existence interesting as well.

That's what makes you a great teacher, Destin; you never lost the intense curiosity of childhood, but it's now leavened by your experience in breaking a subject into sensible chunks. You have gotten sophisticated in your ability to simplify.

Kristy

The quality, intensity and information level on this one is just crazy.. this isn't just a YouTube video.. this is more.. great stuff.. watched it in smaller chunks throughout my day and really enjoyed it..

This was such a fantastic video. I love longer videos where you go on a deep dive (pun intended?) into a topic, especially one that isn't squarely in your engineering wheelhouse. Half the fun of these videos is being able to share your delight in learning new things.

RMD Cade

Love seeing you learn something new and sharing it with us. I dive regularly with a green sea turtle named Tank that weighs about 450 lbs at Georgia Aquarium, where I am a volunteer diver. They are amazing animals. Once COIVD is over, come on down (just a 4-hour drive) and come dive with him. Oh, you'll also be diving with 4 Whale Sharks...

Great video 🇺🇸

Mrgunsngear

This is why I'm here on Patreon. I love getting an email telling me you shared another video.

Ah! Is that why you were in Virginia Beach? I’ve been curious as to how you ended up in my home town every since you mentioned it in NDQ 84. I hope you enjoyed your stay! I’m very proud of the work done by the Virginia Aquarium. They are a great organization that dose our city proud.

Bryan Hakey

Thank you Destin - this was a really well told story. I appreciate your work very much.

WOW! Sea Turtles are amazing.. If you're ever near Wilmington, NC or Kittyhawk, NC there's aquariums near both those beaches that have sea turtle rescue facilities too.. Last year on our beach vacation, there was a sea turtle nest right behind our rental house, and volunteers stood guard every night because they hatched while we were there. Unfortunately we didn't get to see it, but it was cool to learn about them from the volunteers. Thanks for another great video!

Steve Jones

This felt like a full on documentary! Great job. I know some people have mentioned in the past they don’t like the longer videos but I personally enjoy them for the increased level of detail and information that they contain.

Awesome video, thanks for sharing!
