Imminent Final Episode of BSC + Link to Bonus Show Playlist.

The upcoming Episode 38 will be the final episode of Born in the Second Century for the foreseeable future, as the show will go into an indefinite hiatus. I've been considering this decision for the past several months, and there were a number of factors that led to it.

However, I wanted to ensure that you as patrons would still have access to the bonus shows going forward. After extensively looking into all the options, I decided to convert all of the Born in the Century After ...

Companion Post to Bonus Show 25.

In the Road to BSC segment in the latest Bonus Show, I mentioned my old Marcionite Scriptures website and I also said that I would post the New Testament dating timeline from my Defender of Peace blog.

The attached pics show the Marcionite Scriptures homepage. In the fourth pic, if you scroll down to the paragraph on the catechism, you can see the "in-universe" explanation for where these texts were coming from. I found these pics on the Wayback Machine after recording the sho...

Born in the Second Century Announces YouTube Channel.

Currently I'm working on Churchfails Part 2, but I also began uploading full BSC episodes to the YouTube channel at the attached link. If you are interested in YouTube, and watching or listening to videos thereon, please consider subscribing to this channel.

The videos are only an audio recording with a waveform and graphic, but one benefit is that I fully captioned them (using Premiere; they're not just the native YouTube captions), which solves a big issue that I've had since the begi...

Chris, a called Apostle by God's Grace, to the Community of Readers: greetings.

I will be turning off billing for the 01/01/24 and 02/01/24 cycles, which means that 2 forthcoming Bonus Shows (December and January) will be a free gift, similar to the salvation that we all receive through Christ's blood in the grace of the Saints.

I don't want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that if, on the above dates, you receive a communication from Patreon to the effect that the Day of ...

Presenting the October 2023 installment of Born in the Second Century After Dark, an exploration of the Secret Gospel of Mark, and the arguments for and against its authenticity.

Note: The host reads Clement's Letter to Theodore in its entirety in this Episode. There are no chapter divisions available on the Patreon platform, so for reference, the timestamps for the reading are 8:57 to 14:20.

The host discusses topics of interest including: Bart Ehrman employing an argument from s...

BSC After Dark 21: Commentary on BSC Episode 20.

Presenting the September 2023 installment of Born in the Second Century After Dark, a full commentary on Episode 20 of Born in the Second Century (the Apologetics Parody).

In going through Episode 20 in detail, the host also discusses topics of interest including: whether J. Warner Wallace's conversion story makes sense; the trade secrets of Christian apologetics; whether someone could ever be "deconverted" by a Bart Ehrman book; why the "cushion" in Mark's Gospel is so important to apo...

Shared document (show notes) + Release updates + Audience participation.

First, thank you very much to all the new members.

I just finished recording Episode 33; it's a fairly long one that looks to be about 2:10 or 2:15 or so in total. Quitting smoking/vaping on August 26 (after 21 years) made my September about as barren of activity as the First Century is of written Christian sources. It wasn't until halfway through Week 3 that I began feeling slightly normal and could begin even working on Episode 33. As a result I'm behind on Episodes, so this is my pla...

Document shared: Gospel of John per R. Bultmann

Apologies for the lateness of this. I actually felt mostly normal today, which is good, so I completed Version 1 of the Gospel of John reconstruction.

I've done about 20 - 30 mock-ups of commentators' reconstructions of things like the sources of the Gospels, or Paul's letters, or the Evangelion. Rudolf Bultmann's reconstruction of the Gospel of John has been by far the most complicated and confusing to do. The reason is that he doesn't systematically identify which line belongs to whic...

July Bonus Show to Be Released within a Day. August 2023 Schedule.

I've just finished the editing of the July Bonus Show (Q&A) and sent it for mastering; I expect to get it back tomorrow and to upload the show then. I apologize for the delay which was due to illness last week (as I will explain on the show and which you might also be able to tell somewhat from my voice on the track). I would have asked for a healing from Jesus, but I simply wasn't confident that I could deliver a comeback that would have impressed him enough to grant me the healing.

Document shared: Gospel of Mark Triharmonium.

One of the questions received for the Q&A Show was about the Q hypothesis. I used that as motivation to finish a project that I've been putting off for some time, which is to create an annotated Gospel of Mark that shows when Matthew and Luke follow Mark's order.

In looking at the Markan redaction parts, I think there is definitely a case to be made for either a Proto-Mark or Deutero-Mark, although it could also be the case that Mark was heavily edited directly prior to its inclusio...

BSC After Dark 18: Matthew's Birth Narrative.

Presenting the June 2023 installment of Born in the Second Century After Dark, in which the host presents an analysis of the Birth Narrative in Matthew's Gospel.

The episode presents, as a starting point, Raymond Brown's analysis of the Birth Narrative in Matthew as being a composite story. From there, the focus is placed on late dating as well as Matthew's intent to link his artificial "Magi" story with the Testimonia collections.

I'm sharing a new document for Patrons, but before going into that I wanted to mention that listeners Todd, Dan, and others have mentioned the possibility of a Q&A Bonus Show. It seems like a good idea so if anyone has any questions they would like to be answered, they can post them in the comments or message me on here, and once I have a critical mass I will do a Q&A show.

For June of 2023:

The Main Episode will be on JUSTIN MARTYR'S ALLEGED USE OF THE GOSPELS.

The Bonus Show will be on MATTHEW'S BIRTH NARRATIVE, AND ROAD TO BSC PART 3 OF 4.

Bonus Materials to be issued this month include my master note on Justin's alleged use of the Gospels, which includes all of his "Gospel-like" material, but transposed onto the Gospel of Matthew itself, so one can see all the differences. And uh...similarities, I guess. I think this will be a useful tool o...

Gospel of Matthew, Working Copy

In addition to the monthly Bonus Shows, I wanted to also start sharing more of my show preparation materials, and so over time I'll be posting more of my so-called "Working Copies," which, for the New Testament, are based on the NASB.

I remember having a book called "The Bible With Sources Revealed" that color-coded the various parts of the Torah (J writer, P writer etc.) So over time I adopted a similar concept for my own versions that I use to prepare the show. In this copy of Matthew...

BSC After Dark 17: Close Reading of Mark Chapter One.

Presenting the May 2023 installment of Born in the Second Century After Dark, in which the host risks an attempt at a close reading of Mark Chapter One.

The episode begins with observations about the Opening Skit from BSC Episode 29, and is followed by a discussion of the major pericopes in Mark 1, with a focus on late dating and a reduction of Mark's legendary narrative to the mundane. The Baptism of Jesus and the relationship between Mark, Matthew, Luke, and Q come in for analysis. View Post

A "Thank You" for your patience.

While I do plan to put out bonus shows in January, I wanted to thank you for bearing with me over the past few months by pausing payments through March 1, 2023. This doesn't mean that anything is changing with the show, but that I wanted to thank you for bearing with my shaky release schedule these past few months.

BSC After Dark 14. Bart (Ehrman)'s Nightmare 6: Papias and the Gospel Origins Invitational.

The next "non-gospel" source presented by Bart Ehrman in "Did Jesus Exist" is the infamous Papias. He considers Papias an independent source for the Historical Jesus because Papias does not appear to be getting his information about Jesus from the New Testament gospels. Therefore, host Chris Palmero presents the "Gospel Origins Invitational" to explore whether Papias indeed knew the canonical gospels.

The topics discussed include, viz.: the notices about the sequence and authorship of t...

Upcoming BSC Shows

A brief update on the planned shows over the next two weeks or so.

This week I'll be doing the Patreon show for the next installment of the Ehrman series. It's about Papias, but Bart Ehrman really doesn't give us much on Papias to work with, so it'll be my responsibility to inject sufficient Papias into the Papias show. But since he essentially takes the maximilist position on Papias, my plan for the show is to include a thrashing of the (similarly conservative) Monte Shanks book.
