Why Snatch Blocks are AWESOME (How Pulleys Work) - Smarter Every Day 228

For some reason Patreon sent me an email about this video today - good timing as I've just 3d printed a pair of snatch blocks. Needed some pulleys to make it easier to open the big garage door for the kids (we don't usually have automatic or motorised opening in the UK) and got carried away down the pulley rabbit hole. So now have a big pile of pulleys and related items, like snatch blocks, to play with and to teach the kids. Think I'll show them this video too.

Pulleys are super useful in heavy rescue as well. Speaking of: thank you for putting a blanket on the tensioned cable. Saves lives

Destin, you most likely had this video pop up in your feed. But I found this amazing. https://youtu.be/vM24klVyxFk

SNATCH BLOCKS! Used them 2 weekends in a row, my Dad and I went snowmobiling the first weekend we got stuck in the slushy snow, and the second weekend some water got into the fuel tank and the snowmobile wouldn't run, imagine that ;), So we double snatch blocked it back onto the trailer. Luckily it died at the trailer...

Do you ave any recommendations for the brand or type of snatch block one should by if they just want to have one handy?

Stop being amateur and get a 3rd snatch block. You'll be able to pull that jeep backwards.

I'm getting the husband a snatch block for Christmas. :D

Nice! I didn't know about snatch blocks.

This info, I've never thought about before. Interesting and useful. Thanks Destin!

SNATCH BLOCK!!!

So i've always kinda known how pulleys work, but now I Really know, and now im thinking back to all the overhead cranes i've ever used and they all have a block and tackle setup to them... Not knowing exactly what was going on, I figured the extra cables were for strength, especially on the 150 ton crane... Now I realize they were for mechanical advantage. I need to get me some snatch blocks...

He needs to link every video he wants to make money from on here since he's selected to be paid per video rather than per month. Wouldn't be surprised if this is automated too.

I hope to one day have as much wonder about the things of this world as you do.

Printer is warming up now, can't wait to share this with the kids.

Good video. I like how you had your kids do the heavy lifting (literally) lol. I can think of so many applications where snatch blocks and advanced pulley systems are used.

Coincidentally, just last evening, I watched this vid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbMSBw-rzEg ...and although those guys are bonkers, the lightweight snatch block system they demonstrated looks quite compulling. See what I did there? Yeah, I'm not proud.

Please don't link spam here. It looks like Youtube description :)

Hmm, I wonder where you got the idea to do this video from? NDQ. Looking forward to it!
