A Very Belated Headquarters / Channel Update

https://youtu.be/DfInPHoQG7s

Yeah... I shot this a long time ago but due to me repeatedly forgetting to tell my computer to no go to sleep while it uploaded, ehh it just didn't happen until now. Yay!

This is long, rambly, and at times, the result of forgotten caffeination. Is it entertaining? Maybe. Is it informative? I guess. Is it polished? Ha! No.

I'm running a little behind on getting CED Part 3 really moving, but if all goes to plan I'll have that video shot by the end of this week. I'm in a bit of a time crunch as I have a wedding to attend this coming weekend, so that may be put on hold.

Speaking of time crunches, I want to let you all know that November will almost certainly be a slow month for me due to family obligations and travel. I'm gonna try my best to work ahead, and maybe try and get some more topics like the LCCS monitor going (that went surprisingly quickly). I know that every time I express apologies for low output y'all are kind and tell me not to worry but clearly I haven't listened as here I am apologizing again. Oh well.

Thanks everyone!

Comments

also, the comment above mentioning using 900mhz equipment for the link between houses is definitely spot on. I'm sure you know that microwaves operate at 2.4 ghz precisely because that frequency resonates with water quite well, and of course then leaves and rain would block it quite well...

Ben Klopfenstein

sounds to me like you need to use one of ubiquiti's edgerouters. those things are excellent and in my experience never need to be reset. you could also attach your hotspot to it as a secondary internet connection, and you can set it up to compensate for BufferBloat (https://www.bufferbloat.net/projects/) which is what kills your download while you upload.

Ben Klopfenstein

I really enjoyed watching this, so thank you!

Regarding the room sound: The duvets will only absorb high frequencies, while the boomy room sound you hear the microphone pick up is made up of lower frequencies. Absorption of low frequencies = mass. So if you going for blankets then you need heavy sound blankets. I would also recommend building some kind of bass traps out of dense rockwool and put them in the corners where three or two wall/ceiling planes intersect, since it is there the lower frequencies build ups are in a room.

This. 900MHz band is much better for getting through “near line of sight” than typical WiFi frequencies (2400MHz, 5800MHz). From memory there’s only 1-2 bands in 900MHz ISM range, but out in a rural area it’s likely there’s not much competing use to interfere with your signal. Ewen PS: maybe install both in parallel and use whichever link has best performance on the day.

Ewen McNeill

Satellite Internet is generally both very expensive, and has really slow upload (and fairly slow download). So my guess is it wouldn’t be that viable as an option. Ewen

Thanks for the update. Seems like HQ is pretty much a fully functional studio now! For reference it sounded like the non camera (Tascam) audio was pushed a wee bit hot (or needs a little more limiting) — it seemed to be clipping slightly at the peak of the speech volume (and the camera audio wasn’t). Probably only 2-3dB over as it was just brief moments, but happened several times in first and last third of the hour. Other than that the audio seems pretty good. Ewen

I'll vote no for the early release. I prefer the current early access to the final vids with the occasional behind the scenes and/or extended talks here on Patreon or on TC2. You're current format is great as is. Also, can I have some of your gear when you're done with it!? lol. I'd love a MiniDisc deck and after watching this will probably visit eBay to look for one. ;-)

Patrick Bianchi

I'm leaning on no for an early access, rough cut. I don't mind waiting for the finished product; and, would rather that you have more you or project time then spending it on putting that together and uploading rough cuts.

Linh Pham

What frequency are you using for your wireless bridge? For penetration, a lower frequency is better, so you should look into the 900MHz range. Also: for rebooting the router: may i suggest a sOnOff switch with tasmota flashed, controlled via MQTT?

Mat Stu

No to early edit. It will delay you, but the main reason is I just want to watch it once, and the finished version is the one I want to watch. And an early edit is too tempting to watch, which will spoil the fun. I've worked from home for 6 years, running my own business, and my advice to you is to set distinct work and non-work times. Creating a routine can really help, and help with sanity of working too hard or burn-out. But then I'm breaking my own rule now, so take that how you want! Argh - one more thing! You're focusing heavily on audio/video quality, but quite frankly it's excellent already and any improvements won't bring in more viewers/subscribers IMHO. It's all about the content.

Big Car

Could be like the mic they have sitting on the desk of late night talk shows.

Bard

I noticed your Anker Premium BT speaker there 😉 One of my favorites!

This is the first time I saw your house.... It is super nice! I love how you made it 100% yours! I wish I had the imagination and resources to do exactly what I want at my house!

Vegasguy

Hey Alex sorry for the crappy Internet access in your area I know how much that sucks. Just please keep up the great work that you've done thus far and I'm sure I speak for most of your fans that we'll love it and we appreciate the hard work you in providing us this quality entertainment.

Mark G

Have to say it as you're clearly not listening :) Don't worry about vids! Life always comes first. Enjoy the wedding and thank you for sharing whatever you can.

Richard Hicks

Hey Alec, not sure if you caught it in your patreon post, but to me, your audio sounds off compared to usual. I'm not sure if you changed something, or if something went wrong, but if you compare this video to the Chevy Volt video from August, I think you can hear a clear difference between the two, where the older video sounds much better. Edit Well, just two minutes in does kinda explain it. I personally still prefer the previous setup, sound-wise.

Tim Derks

+1 I think most of us who support creators via Patreon do it because we want to support/encourage by relieving the need to hurry up and get something out there to feed the YT algorithm.

CharlieVictor

Reading yours and updates by other youtubers that I follow on patreon I almost get a bad conscience that you guy feel under so much stress by a perceived obligation to deliver content. I understand that this is to a degree caused by the Youtube relevance algorithms, but I sincerely hope that patreon does not enable this kind of pressure. I would encourage you guys to hopefully see the patreon support as means of alleviating this kind of stress. I think that most of us believe in quality before quantity..

Thanks for the update!

Great update! The issue where your internet becomes really slow when you're uploading is almost certainly solvable - you just need to back off the upload speed a little so that the line isn't so swamped that it can't acknowledge incoming packets. (Sometimes this is a setting you can alter in your router, or you could have the same effect by using something like a software utility on your PC to cap uploading speed so it can't go so high that it swamps your line.) - There's some further reading at https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/331754-slow-dsl-download-speeds-when-uploading-home-network-any-fixes which might be helpful too.

This is going to sound very weird, but, for a show in which old technology is usually up front and center in the limelight... I kind of liked the almost-hidden-but-still-visible lapel mic for some weird "accuracy" nostalgia... Maybe just have the mic there, but disconnected? Strictly for aesthetic?

48:12, I know it's important to hear (read) the words, so: your output is satisfactory to me.

Travis Snoozy

I feel your pain, I was lucky and worked for a local wifi ISP which was great, but then they sold out and new people sucked us dry with limits. 2 years ago i finally got cable out here, am only house on road with it because squeaky wheel etc.... And now its 960mbit and its heaven. High speed and no neighbors, only taken 20 years living here lol Btw, snow and ice will cause you some signal issues.... can you setup something local with a router that could load balance between the link to neighbor and say an ATT modem on an unlimited plan?

Jonathan OConnor

Thank you for every word. Only use auto audio as a last resort, for exactly the reason you mentioned. But your next camera could be with manual audio as an option. It does save time.

Simon Mikkelsen

Are you still working on the video you promised of the british caption system?

I did a quick google of your Ubiquiti and it looks like it is a parabolic antenna. I am wondering if you used Yagi’s if that would be enough to punch through the trees.

RYAN INGOGLIA

On the idea of the early release videos, I am not so interested in that. If you put them out, I may or may not view them, but prefer to see the finished product rather than "seeing how the sausage is made." Regarding the work/personal life balance, I think that personal and family time is definitely of high priority and if you let that slide, it will show up in your work. I'm confident that you can work out those time management and production issues, especially if we viewers provide feedback. While I'd like to see videos come out more frequently, I'd hate to see the quality suffer because of that. No matter what, I have always enjoyed your videos and thanks for keeping us updated.

Mark Hesse

For the issue with disconnecting during uploading, have you considered uploading the file to an intermediate server using a protocol like rsync that supports resuming uploads and then uploading to YouTube from that server?

Tyler Knott

A proper drop ceiling in the room will help take care of a lot of that echo and other sound.

TNSheep

holy 50 minutes.

Re: your internet situation. Does that AT&T box not have a bandwidth cap? If not, have you considered getting and mounting a rooftop antenna? My parents live in rural Australia and until they got satellite, they used 3G with a rooftop-mounted rod antenna (plugged into a tiny pocket Netgear Aircard pocket router) which gave them a solid 6 Mbit (vs without the antenna it was a flaky 1 Mbit, even when they hung it up on a big pole). They also had lots of trees between them and the base station (they live in a valley that the base station shoots down).

kalleboo

BTW, the "Daiso" brand is a chain of 100 yen stores (=dollar stores). My BD-RE disc is branded by them, didn't know they used to also sell MD discs. Wonder if they also cost just 100 yen?

kalleboo

If you posted the early cuts, I'd probably watch them, but I'd probably watch them *instead* of the final videos. Depending on what the videos are about, I may go back to watch some of the B-roll, but that probably would not be great for your metrics either. So I guess I'd be interested, but maybe not the best person to actuallyo give it to!

demize

350 kB/s download - Yeah, I remember these old times ... :D About the "super early release" question: I'm fine with the current type of early releases you do. I don't think that an "unedited" version would have an additional value. Do you plan to make a video about the GameBoy Color laying around there? :D
