RD 2 Ch 39

Chapter 39

The yacht was cutting through the waves while I double-checked the gas tank, measuring the decrease in gas against the progress I was making. I was going to cut it close. They must have not planned to leave the boat running for as long as they had.

In fairness, they were also dead.

To pass the time, I had found a coffee pot and filters, using them to purify the poison from the Stymphalian Bird’s poop. It was a tedious process as I kept breaking filters and had to triple up to make any progress, going through them quickly.

The coffee machine was absolutely ruined by this point, but I’d just smash it when I was done, so no one killed themselves trying to use it later.

While I was working through the process again, the boat rocked enough that I had to balance the damned thing to keep it from spilling the current batch.

“Damnit,” I swore as I almost poisoned myself.

I froze, hearing guttural words that brought back many old memories. I recognized the demonic language, and I sucked the coffee pot into my spatial ring for later.

Apparently, I was not alone.

“Up. Up,” one growled.

I flattened myself against the wall, hearing their feet on the steps up to the helm.

The second I saw black I twisted, calling forth my Blood Blade even as I thrust. I skewered the first and the second demon on the stairs before quickly snapping a kick and sending them flying back along with the blood blade.

They tried to get back on their feet seeing that I was unarmed.

It didn’t matter.

A second blood blade was already forming. I severed their heads with the next stroke.

The two bodies were still pinned to the wall with the sword.

The system was quick in retaking their bodies. The more stats a player had from the system, the faster the process.

Other demons on the boat were making enough noise that my killing of those two didn’t alarm any of them.

I pulled out the first sword and reabsorbed the blood. Did these demons follow me?

No, they seemed to be searching rather than having a solid goal.

Which was interesting. Demons were already operating in this area.

I listened for the demon barking orders. He stood at the bow of the ship with his arms crossed, watching as his small crew went to work.

I had learned demonic given it was the best way to get intelligence. He was shouting something about a perimeter in particularly garbled language, even for a demon.

But now I had my target. Blood Bolt took him by surprise, and Sanguine Locking kept him there for later.

I moved over the side of the boat, my sword skewering another demon before I caught the next and threw him against the doorway, my fist connecting with his chest three times before it caved him in as well as destroying the door.

The leader was shouting at the top of his lungs as others moved through the boat.

I pulled the sword out of the deck and waited by the doorway, only to dodge back at the last second as a demon peeled himself out of the shadows to strike me from the right.

Another swooped down on a pair of bat wings.

I punched the shadow user, only for my fist to go through him as he melted away and tried to take my legs out from under me.

The flier latched a pair of claws on my forearm as I warded him off and tried to take flight with me.

I laughed as my blood wound up on his legs, and Blood Hex activated, causing him to scream and crash down on the boat as electricity crackled over his body.

“Now. Let’s get rid of you.” I looked for the shadow demon as I strode over the flier and executed him with a flick of my sword.

If the other hadn’t made a move to save this one… then.

I spun and threw the sword like a spear that tore the railing off the ship as a demon that had tried to free their leader flailed in the air. “Got you.” Without so much as a thought, I was making and throwing another blood blade that spun through the air, slicing the demon in half.

I confirmed his death as he hit the waves and his body disappeared, then I focused back on the leader. “Now, what to do with you.”

The leader struggled in the bindings. His crew was dead.

Thankfully, none of the demons were high enough level to be difficult.

Just in case, I spread out talismans across the ship to alert me if anything came close.

The boat still had another half a day before we arrived at the Heros Clan, and this time, Persephone wasn’t here to kill the demon I was going to interrogate.

He struggled in the bindings, but I bit my thumb and drew a number of inscriptions directly onto his skin. His breathing slowed, and his body went limp. That ought to keep him from causing trouble.

I made a mark on my forehead, not using a talisman this time, and headbutted him.

The world turned upside down as I fell into his soul, which was a cavern dotted with a twisting maze of puddles that had water-filled tunnels beneath them. It seemed he was very comfortable in the water, probably why he was part of this perimeter.

The demon’s eyes rose from one of the puddles. “You have made your final mistake.”

“Yeah, yeah.” I waved his words away. “You’re all so cocky. Let’s have some fun, you and me.”

The demon immediately disappeared under the water with barely a ripple.

I walked calmly through the hundreds of puddles, staring into the surfaces for information. This demon was connected to water enough that he had pretty tight control of the water in his soul.

That is to say, he was more aware of reflections and what they might give off.

The faintest splash sounded to my right, and I leaned forward, out of the way of a jagged spine that embedded itself in the cavern.

“Going to have to try harder than that. Let’s see. Start with the basics. What perimeter are you setting up?” I asked.

He answered me with another spine that I casually dodged.

I stared at the mirror-smooth ceiling that told me everything I needed to know.

The Heros Clan was clearly depicted, its barrier shattered and burning. The image I was seeing was not necessarily reality, but it was his expected reality. The demon believed this was occurring.

Another spine came up, and this time I caught it, earning myself a few cuts on my hand, but now I had a weapon.

“So, you’re leading an assault on the Heros Clan. Why?” I flicked my spine to the side and deflected another of his attacks while trying to read his soul.

A number of images flashed by. Several large, powerful-looking demons lording over the viewer as well as several important figures of the clan. It stayed locked on Persephone for a moment before moving on.

I never showed up in any of the images.

Curious.

Had the clan’s boat just been in the way of demons traveling to the clan?

An attack like this would be huge and draw from many demonic cells.

The trick was, I doubted this happened in my past life. Though I wasn’t initiated then, I doubted the Clan wouldn’t have remembered and talked about this. Especially if they successfully repelled the demons, which they must have.

The question was, what had I changed?

Obviously, I had made a few ripples, but the big ones would be removing the Blood Dragon and upsetting the secret operation underneath the clan islands.

“Was it the Blood Dragon?” I asked.

The demon attacked me again, the roof of the place rippling with uncertainty, fogging over.

It was confused by my question, so the answer was not my killing of the Blood Dragon. “Then it was the underground operation. What were they doing?”

Rather than answer, the demon jumped from a puddle and tried to stab me with another spine.

I parried his strike, locking the spines together and pulling him forward to headbutt. “Not a great idea.” I grabbed his throat while he was stunned and threw him down face-first before putting my foot on his head. “Now, stay still. What were they doing under the clan?”

Images moved by almost too quickly for me to digest.

“Intelligence, spy work. That’s a no-brainer. Same too for making husks. Who were you looking for?” As I asked the question, his mind solidified on Persephone before he actively tried to think of something else. “No.” I stomped on him hard enough to derail his train of thoughts. “Why are you looking for Persephone?”

Meanwhile, my thoughts were racing. Their search for Persephone had nothing to do with me. That warren under the clan wasn’t new; it had been an ongoing project.

If…

Yeah. In my past life, they must have eventually rooted out Tartarus. The demons might have even taken it out before their invasion.

The clan would absolutely be the type to pretend the branch didn’t exist after such a massive failure. They were also so removed from everything that the layperson among the clan might not even know the branch disappeared, not to mention those outside the clan.

My meddling in that underground chamber had likely set off their plans early.

“Why Tartarus?” I asked the demon.

The image above when I’d asked about Persephone was too vague. She wasn’t the goal. It had something to do with the branch.

The demon was clearly resisting me, trying to think of anything but the question I was asking.

There was a splash, and one of the puddles appeared under him and, unfortunately, under me.

My weight on him was gone, and I nearly fell face-first. But my fall was changed as the demon snatched my leg and tried to drag me underwater, thrashing like a shark with its prey.

The water went red with blood, but not really from me. The water was changing from his imagination of what was happening to me.

I didn’t panic, going limp for a moment as he tried to harm me.

Once he stopped to check to see if he’d succeeded, I grabbed him and kicked hard off the bottom of the tunnel to launch us back up out of the puddle.

He landed first, with my knee in the small of his back, letting out a pained cry. “Stop! I don’t know!”

I pinned his head to the ground and breathed. Part of him dissolved and was absorbed by my Soul Absorption Arts. “That’s fine. I’ll just finish you then.”

The demon panicked, squirmed, and completely forgot about resisting my questions.

“Why Tartarus?” I asked again, glancing up at the stone for answers.

The fog he’d laid over his thoughts lifted, and I saw a circular dais covered in inscription runes. It was made of dark stone and covered in blood-red designs.

My jaw dropped.

A second later, the image in the demon’s mind changed from the dais to the Demon Lord, the powerful demon staring down his red eyes boring through the demon’s soul and threatening to shake my own just seeing the demon’s memory.

I breathed deep and devoured a good chunk of the demon's soul before I fled from his mind.

The demon was screaming despite my bindings as his skin bulged.

Rolling to my feet, I jumped to the top of the boat and then dove into the water as waves rocked me in every direction.

The demon I had interrogated had just detonated himself. I wasn’t sure if it was something the Demon Lord had put inside of him or bound him to or what.

But by revealing that image to me, something had activated.

And now I knew why.

Because, apparently, Tartarus had the anchor for one of the nine hell gates.

I let the waves lap at me for a moment as I floated in the ocean and watched the yacht sink.

Fuck me. No wonder the Demon Lord was directly involved and sending people after the Heros Clan, and why there were so many demons and even a corpse tree underneath the clan.

I didn’t even know that the anchors for the demon gates were already on Earth. I had always figured they arrived with The Rapture. The term ‘gate’ was always a bit misleading. Everybody considered them big archways.

Which there was, but the archway wall was all shimmering magic.

That magic came from the anchors, which were big black stone slabs absolutely covered in inscriptions. Until the anchors were smashed, another gateway could always appear on them.

Later, during the second war, we learned that they were used to hone in on the newly hatched world while the rest of the universe didn’t even know Earth existed.

Right now, there were legions and legions of demons waiting for Earth’s protective barrier to fade. Once it did, they could launch themselves through the hell gates to this world before anyone else.

I shook my head.

How was this never discussed? No, that was wrong. The Heros Clan likely had no idea what they even held. Sure, black stones with red writings were a little ominous, but that anchor had a lot more functionality than just making portals…

I sighed.

Persephone was using the anchor to hide Tartarus. It would have plenty of inscriptions baked into it to obscure all manners of tracking. Not only could it make portals, but it was a powerful tool.

With that in my mind, I checked the sun for my bearings and then leaned forward, starting to swim towards the clan.

I hoped I would arrive in time to help with the demon siege.

Comments

I would like to see Bran show up during the siege and just let loose with a smile showing the Clan what fighting demons is all about

Ash Goetz

And yes before anyone says anything in a couple different places I did make a comment in previous chapters about how we may end up seeing bran have to save her. (Ever since Bruce mentioned doing a picture of her) we knew in some form that she’s going to either be full harem member or an important ally since he has yet to spend time having an image made of anyone without a close relationship to the MC (if he has its before I became a member)

Blnded

And I’m also amused but not to surprised that this is how this chapter played out. I’m glad I was right on the “he has to find a way to save Pers and the rest of Tartarus

Blnded

Completely random but just had a thought. So bran resets his level every time he accumulates enough bloodlines to rank up his class but until the primordial bloodline was introduced we were under the assumption that things stopped at SSS. What if after enough blood is collected he somehow can rank up his class to mythic as well. I wonder what the amount of stats would be from that per level

Blnded

Damn that was good!

Jeremy Daniels

Same.

Lycaon

Honestly, that may be the main reason why Bruce made this the second Zeus. He gets to have Zeus be a character, while completely avoiding the rapist vibes.

Nicholas Kratzer

I doubt it will play out like that, but I really wish it would.

Nicholas Kratzer

That's a pretty good twist! I didn't see that coming.

ReadingObsessed

I was thinking he’d use an S rank cyclops femur

Iron Akela

Yeah. Just glad this series' Zeus isn't a raping piece of shit like the one in actual myth.

KiwiHermit

You raise a good point Austin. Bran said he remembered where all 5 were in book 1, I think. Of course, Tartarus might not be hiding on the clan islands. They probably are as the demons will likely know where it is and that’s where they were digging. But yeah, I could see them moving it in the previous timeline

Iron Akela

So that's what happened. In the other timeline the demons hid, dug down and found persephone, took them out and seized control of the stone. The rest if the clan even the 3 leaders wouldn't have even known as the had no idea how to find her. This time though Bran revealed them so they had to go full on war to try and find it. So now, kt only can Bran train up people to fight, but he can also search for the stones to destroy them and prevent the worst of the damage.

Jericho Knight

that is a lot of info and eye widening. Lots of things to think about. I too am wondering when Bran is going to make it back. thank you for the chapter.

Tim Nielsen

So he never said that the stone are immobile if that were the case he could go and smash them all right now and save himself a lot of trouble

Austin Wolf

It's a pretty fair assessment the only people to survive this infighting are usually the gods themselves and even then there are several gods that fell to it in mythology as well

Austin Wolf

Oh, he can get her in trouble without revealing his past and his knowledge of what the demons are looking for. He can do it with a drawing of the anchor. "Those demons came for something YOU are hiding, aren't they?! Those demons built those tunnels and possessed members of this clan to find what you are hiding, didn't they?! You killed that demon I was interrogating (and nearly killed me along with it) to hide what they're looking for, didn't you?! To hide something that looks like this! "Good thing I managed to interrogate one before you managed to kill it and murder me, huh? Unfortunate that every member of this clan who got possessed by those demons and died in their attacks did so because of YOUR secrets, didn't they?!"

Lycaon

Maybe Bran will turn her into a socket wench instead...

Az Reel

With a socket wrench, you mean? And don't give me some crap that since she's an elder and it'd be elder abuse...

NovaZero

Slavery brands were probably made specifically for people like her.

NovaZero

Is Tartarus and, by extension, their anchor on the Heros islands? I don't think so.

ArbabSB

Yeah, the fate of Tartarus and why Bran never heard of them I totally get. The issue I have is if the hellgate formed on or under one of the islands, surely Bran would have heard of that after the first demon war. Though we did hear that Circe died closing a gate, so maybe that’s the gate that formed on clan islands.

Iron Akela

Bran will probably need to have a soul-to-soul conversation with Persephone to get her to listen to him at all. And that's if she is reasonable at all, which I am not willing to bet money on. As for why the rest of the clan never found out about Tartarus being destroyed by demons, I think that was just a natural consequence of their secrecy. The rest of the clan had no way to contact Tartarus, no word on their location or status, so Tartarus died as they lived, in compllete secrecy. By the time the rest of the clan fought those demons as part of the demon war, they would have no idea where they came from. And even once they found the Hellgate, they wouldn't know that it's location was the former HQ of their clan's fourth branch. If there was anyone who knew Tartarus existed even left in the clan after all their losses, they probably didn't want to discuss that there is/was another branch of the clan that never talks to them or helps them to new members/servants like Bran.

ArbabSB

Yeah she’s ignorant. I hope she can be convinced once she’s told what she actually has. If not, hope the other leaders stand back and let Bran deal with her.

Iron Akela

Yeah some days being 2 chapters and some being one is annoying. It’s box of chocolates bollocks :o)

Iron Akela

It’s better than that. Or worse depending on how you see it. Bran now knows that the stones needed to form the demon gates are already on earth. He knows where the gates will form. So he now has a mission - weaken the demons in the Rapture by destroying the gates before they form!

Iron Akela

Oh, she's a traitor. No doubt about that and she probably had an inkling that the Anchor Stone was Demonic in nature, but expected to use it against the demons while keeping her personal quest for vengeance secret. But not a "villain" in the sense she was a Demon or helping the demons... Just blinded by Vengeance.

Jamie R

Yeah she’s ignorant of what he’s been using to hide her branch. She needs an attitude adjustment, and to come into the light, but she’s no demon.

Iron Akela

Ah I forget sometimes how much I hate the Greek pantheon. Their incompetence in this series in looking after their own territory and all the infighting just reminded me somewhat.

KiwiHermit

I feel like explaining what that stone really is, plus opening up about the other timeline a little, will be enough. Maybe with some knocking some sense into Persephone.

Iron Akela

Yeah I get the feeling the need for hiding has developed an inertia of its own. Bringing Tartarus into the light will help deal with the demons. Tartarus are supposed to deal with Shiva and that clan, and be the hidden remnant to rebuild the clan if it’s destroyed. But they’re too well hidden and get destroyed without anyone knowing.

Iron Akela

Interesting. That’s one of the missing pieces to explain things with Persephone and Tartarus. As the Rapture hasn’t happened, I’m willing to give the first Zeus, Hercules, and Persephone the benefit of the doubt as they probably don’t know what it is they’ve been using to power whatever is keeping Tartarus hidden. It is possible that Persephone knows the demons are after that stone, but it’s also possible she doesn’t. I’ve a feeling once she knows what it is she’ll allow it to be destroyed. Eventually. And I suspect Bran will have to reveal who he is and where he’s from to Persephone, and I suspect one or more of the other leaders. If those demons were forming a perimeter, they probably boarded the yacht when it crossed their line and they went to investigate. Doubt they were on the yacht before Bran heard them. The one question I still have is the hell gate which opened and probably destroyed Tartarus, how did the clan not know as I would have thought the clan would have been forced to fight them and destroy the gate. Unless there’s like a portal to Tartarus on the islands but Tartarus itself is under another landmass or something. Bran is going to save the day, we know this. He’ll probably show up on the islands just as the biggest wave of demons comes out of the sea and tear through them with ease! He’s an army breaker, and this will likely be an army. Just wondering how bad it will be before he shows up.

Iron Akela

As I said in a previous chapter, I think she created it as kind of bunker for when shit goes sideways. Probably though that by hiding the branch they'd at least have some of the clan survive in a worst case scenario. I'm betting that's how she sold the idea to the original Zeus as well. Unfortunate, that need for secrecy became almost pathological for her and she let her fear and paranoia twist the original intentions.

Daniel Glasson

I believe the demons boarded the yacht once it crossed a perimeter around the island. Which means that Bran is not too far away from where he needs to go

Az Reel

I struggle to understand the point of Tartarus. Okay so they hide and....do what? What benefit are they providing the clan from their position of secrecy? Nothing. Persephone is allowed to kidnap other members of the clan in the name of her precious secrecy, but there's no explanation of why them staying hidden is important at all. The whole branch just seems like a way for Persephone to indulge her paranoia, cowardice, and control freak tendencies.

ArbabSB

Annnnnd this is why we needed double chappie :(

NovaZero

I'm not so kind. Looks like a traitor, acts like a traitor and helps the enemy? Traitor. Oh, she didn't know any better? I'll remember that the next time I do treacherous things.

NovaZero

Hard time? No. Give me a 6 dollar socket wrench and you'd be surprised how much persuasion can be done. Of course, we can always just accuse her of hiding a demon gate. But I like my idea better.

NovaZero

I think in the previous timeline her entire branch was murdered then replaced, stepford style until the demons made off with the gate. Then the clan covered it up pretending the Tartarus branch never existed, since it would make them look inept to the wider world.

Fervent Fiend

Likely Persephone won't believe Bran and will refuse to turn over the anchor in her usual sneering arrogant way. Hope Bran decisively deals with her and her branch of useless cowards, freeing his mother in the process. Tartarus is a massive liability to the clan and I hope the other branch heads join Bran and come down hard on Persephone.

ArbabSB

Persephone just creates problem after fucking problem. Doubt she'll agree to hand over the anchor stone and will throw another tantrum. Just hope Bran deals with her and her stupid branch of cowards. The rest of the clan should come down hard on Tartarus for exposing the clan to a major attack from demons. Is this Demon Lord the same one that did a mutual kill with Shiva in the previous timeline? Were the demons on the boat the entire time since Bran rose from the depths? How did he miss them while setting a courss for the islands and making bird poop poison?

ArbabSB

She reminds me of Sasuke Uchia from Naruto. Obsessed to the point of killing her own allies and betraying her own people/family for her obsession, revenge. Cant stand the litte shit.

Rotaugur

Looks like the clan had no idea what it was dealing with. Remember, Persephone set up the Tartarus safe house with the help of the previous Zeus, meaning this goes back a long ass time.

Daniel Glasson

So , does it only sound to me like it or is there a good chance, that In the past future persephones playing with something she does not understant could have lead to the destruction of the world? And is Bran really so bad at keeping secrets, that he will expose his knowledge when he tears Persephone a new one?

Rotaugur

I guess so. I must have just got spoiled by the last 2 days.

STANSTAN42

The plot it thickens... Now we understand what happened to Tartarus in the OT, but Bran will have a hard time convincing Persy without revealing who he is and when he is from

Az Reel

Thank you, great way to start the weekend

shackcat

Persephone is not a major villain. She might have a clue what they have and has been risking the clan for secrecy. Hence, why she killed the previous interrogation subject before Bran could find out.

Conan Whalen-mckain

You thought wrong?

patroen usre

Great chapter!!! I knew Persephone wasn’t a demon or working for them! She’s still bitchy and thoroughly unlikable but way to many signs pointed to her.

Azazel

What s twist. Pesephone really wasnt a demon. New information about the Demon Lords invasion plans. With no boat Bran has to show up at the last minute. Popcorn is a must have.

Cory Orr

I thought we were getting 2 chapters a day until we were finished?

STANSTAN42

So Persephone is playing with something she doesn’t understand and in the process led the demons to target her.

Gabriel Betenson

Well shit... So Persephone wasn't a villain Afterall, just someone obsessed with revenge who happened to hold the very tool that would bring about the world's end... Naive idiot. Guess it's time to go save the clan, and Persephone in the process while reaming her out for hiding an anchor stone (Gonna love reading that scene). The exterminate the Demons laying siege to the clan and drag Tartarus into the light to take accountability for their stupidness. Also, what's the bet his mother will be the key to finding Tartarus and the Anchor Stone? I really want to know what Persephone has done to her... That might be cause for further punishment from Bran.

Jamie R

I blinked twice and it was done 😂
