Mary Anning - Princess of Paleontology - Extra History

Comments

Very glad you enjoyed it!

Extra History

Our usual one-off music (Odds and Ends) is very peppy, so it didn't fit with the ending of this one. Odds and Ends will still be our default for one-off music, but we'll probably start re-using series music here and there where it seems fitting!

Extra History

I read that she had two brothers, what happened to the one not mentioned?

Kenneth Huang

He learned a trade and went on to a modestly successful career. He outlived Mary and had three children. :)

Extra History

thank you very much for your beautiful work :)

Martin Ockovsky

Awesome episode! There's something so funny and yet awe-inspiring about Mary's hunt for poop. Maybe it's Dan's voice, maybe it's the art...either way, great job on the one-off! I'm glad I could learn about another Mary who changed the world we live in :) Any reason why you went for the Broad Stree Pump music? I love it and it fits in a way. I just wasn't expecting it.

SparkyDJM1

Well perhaps you could try putting it into Google or typing it into the address thingy. To Remind you the site is www.youtube.com/testtube. And that Concludes this Week's Lecture on my understanding of why some Internet Pages look different after you try to send a link to other People.

Martin Verran

But what happened to the brother?

Kenneth Huang

Yeah, I was!

Extra History

I'll take that trade. :)

Extra History

Ah, I see it now! There's no button for me. The page looks like this: https://puu.sh/vsXBp/e2d28ab564.png I tried signing up for User Experience Research studies, but, we'll see.

Extra History

Ironically, I knew about Mary from dinosaur books as a kid, but had no idea she inspired that rhyme.

Robert Rustad

Did you see my Earlier Reply to your Comment in Early Access Delay thingy below?

Martin Verran

I'm glad you've heard it before, though! It's a bit of a consolation prize and I wish she could have known during her life that she would be celebrated, but at least as a society we are starting to do the work of recognizing and appreciating contributions like hers.

Extra History

Yeah, but at least none of the men who stole her work got to be named to receive any credit in this episode. >:)

Extra History

I initially learned about her elsewhere, but I did find their piece on her while researching this episode! I'm very happy to see it got the attention it did. The more people who talk about Mary Anning, the better!

Extra History

Good morning, happy episode!

Extra History

People were socially conservative and Mary had the deck stacked against her in a lot of ways. She was poor, she was a woman, and she wasn't of the Anglican faith (which I didn't go into for this script; she did wind up converting later in life). And yet! She persisted.

Extra History

That's where I first heard about her.

David Lundin

Yeah my Mum works at the Sedgwick Museum in Cambridge (England) and there are a few displays and stuff about what she did and what she contributed.

Elliot Hobbs

I think so as well, but it would probably be lost in time and space (see what i did there?) If it wasn't included into the mythos

Yuval Bar

King in Yellow predates Cthulhu, doesn't it? I thought Cthulhu mythos was partially inspired by the original King in Yellow story.

Extra History

She Mary Anned like a boss.

Extra History

Did you know her already? That's great!

Extra History

It makes me very happy to hear that you learned about her while researching paleontology at such a young age!

Extra History

Ive heard her story a few times before, but i always forget how much(often) Mary gets screwed.

Jane

Gee, a woman doing all the work and having men take all the credit for it? Never heard that one before! Nope, never.

Michael Jebbett

One of the books had the yellow sign, a marking of one of the cthulhu mythos gods, there were also a couple of cultists and a cthulhu thingy, maybe a starborn in the episode as well

Yuval Bar

Even the Tea Party would be bleeding-heart liberals in the Victorian era. Hm, that might make an interesting time travel story. Some extreme-right-wing nutjob goes back in time far enough that his ideas are perceived as radical, with some arguments between them that even normal right-leaning folks would think are ridiculous by modern standards...

Timothy McLean

I'm not that familiar with the Cthulhu Mythos, but I remember reading about that in an RPG book. Mind explaining the connection for folks like us?

Timothy McLean

I assume you don't mean personally?

Timothy McLean

Rejected Princesses did one on her! They're amazing, and worth a checkout.

Edward James Lehar

This IS the Victorian Period they are talking about, bear in mind. People were a lot more Socially Conservative Back then, far more so than People are Today, I'm happy to say.

Martin Verran

I Think I must've been participating in a Barbaric Ritual Known as 'sleeping' when this was uploaded. Man, I love these Series.

Martin Verran

Men iz evil. Angry kitty face. *grrr* >-_-

Kathyrne

Well, i guess she shouldn't have read the king in yellow... :-D

Yuval Bar

She will Mary Anne, she is Mary Anning, she has Mary Anned.

MrBreaksIt

I am interested in paleontology, and I knew her when was 10 years old. Much respect to her....

nathan

I love your videos, even if I know about the topic already, you always give such a broad coverage of a subject everyone can learn something new.

Elliot Hobbs

I'll take what I can get! I certainly don't want to see the main series to get shorter. That would just mean cut content, and that's not how history works.

Scott Masters

It all depends on the length of the main series! Due to production schedules, we have our artists rotate in six week sets. If the main series goes less than six weeks, we fill the remaining spots with a one-of (or two)!

Extra History

I absolutely love this as a one off. I would love to see one between each series.

Scott Masters

Joke's on you. *I* was first.

Extra History

First
