Early Access! Ned Kelly part 3

Comments

I Thought that Quote was attributed to the Famous Pirate Captain, Bartholomew "Black Bart" Roberts.

No worries, Soraya. It's always better to have more grounding in an area before doing a series on its history. I do think it would be nice to include a bibliography in the video credits, as citations are a basic requirement of history scholarship and can be a good starting point for further research.

It can be hard to convey emotion through text, but it did seem to me Martin that your post here and on the poll results were suggesting that Great Northern War had no right to win over Alexander or Caesar. I'm glad to hear you did not intend it that way! Hopefully you'll find that when the series comes out you will learn something new and enjoy the story. :) Peter, we do our best to introduce a wide range of history topics from across the world, but that breadth means that we're often new to learning about a region ourselves. James and I both read through the suggestions from every patron to figure out what areas we might not know enough about yet to come up with good topics from that area. I actually have an Indian history survey on my to-do list because of your comments about it. But I simply don't know much about it yet, and can't add any good topics to the poll until I do. (Though if Akbar had won, I'd have done my level best to read up quickly and do the story justice.) I love that this series has a lot of breadth and think it's totally worth the extra effort we put in to make that possible, but it is a lot of effort. We have to expand our knowledge pool constantly. We don't always do that perfectly. But we try. -Soraya

Extra History

Hahah, glad you caught that one. ;) This series was an interesting one because there are SO MANY sources, including newspapers which have their archives online these days so in one sense it's really easy to check the originally reported facts. But it does feel like the more facts you get, the bigger the reminder that truth can be very subjective, since you have lots of different accounts of the same events in the course of the Kelly story.

Extra History

You basically said that the Great Northern War wasn't worth a video series. That's plain rude to the people who are genuinely curious about it, as there's little coverage of it in western scholarship compared to Caesar and Alexander (both figures for which you could find several video series - it doesn't have to be this video series). I'm still a little peeved that Akbar didn't win his poll (given that it would finally bring us a series of South Asia - an important area that this series really neglects), but I still like learning about what this series brings. Besides, given how shoddy the Suleiman series was (using crappy sources, perpetuating discredited historical theories, and failing to address these problems in the "Lies" video), I'm kind of glad they didn't cover Akbar.

Peter Melling

I like the "wombat out of hell" phrase, getting the reference there ;) It is always fun trying to decipher historical events from opposing VERY biased sources. I rememebr reading about Kelly years ago (around the time of the film with Heath Ledger) and watching the video I had to go check if I'd been remembering it wrong.

As Steve Hart said, "A short life and a merry one!"

I see my favorites lose all the time and I help run the show. And do keep in mind that just because a topic doesn't immediately resonate with you, that doesn't mean it doesn't resonate with someone else. It's unkind to suggest that this is an unworthy choice just because it wouldn't have been your personal choice.

Da kitty has caught up on all da history dat she missed. Onward, Kelly Gang! Onward to... well, probably a really sticky end, but... dat's life... er death... or... sumthin'. Just sayin'... =)

It's not so much that they played out differently than that I didn't go into detail about any death other than Lonigan's (the first officer). McIntyre witnessed Lonigan and later Scanlan being shot. After Kennedy jumped off his horse and ran to the trees, McIntyre took that horse and rode like a wombat out of hell back to safety. After McIntyre left (or rather, as he was fleeing), Kennedy faced off with Ned and lost a short gun duel. He didn't die immediately. He and Ned talked for a bit, mostly about Kennedy's children, and Kennedy begged to be left alive - he was bleeding to death slowly, but wanted to take his chances on a miraculous rescue/recovery. Ned decided not to give him that chance and shot him point blank in the chest, ending it quickly. Then he covered Kennedy with a coat and left. The search party took time to find his corpse because he'd run away from the scene of the other murders during his duel with Ned, and by the time they did find him, his corpse had been chewed up by animals, sparking some nasty rumors that Ned cut his body parts off as trophies. (The autopsy, however, confirmed that it was animals.) ALL THAT SAID. A lot of details surrounding who shot when were pretty hotly contested. Even McIntyre reported it differently at different times. There's certainly room to dispute these details, but it's hard (if not impossible) to arrive at a definitive truth considering how many people had a stake in shaping the narrative to fit their own agenda.

Sgt. Kennedy was still alive, having surrendered, when McIntyre escaped and his body was found some time after the others.

The events at the creek play out a bit different here to the events reported at the time O_o

David Cheval

Haha! It can be done. Ned was a consummate bushman who could handle himself just fine out there. Heck, he prided himself on how well he knew the countryside and could thrive in it.

Extra History

He'll be here!

Extra History

Definitely out of the frying pan and into the fire, at this point!

Extra History

Haha! This is perfect.

Extra History

I would have to recommend not murdering cops, actually! Not following Ned's footsteps in general would be a good idea, as the end of this series will show.

Extra History

It was not a bright era for Victoria colony's police force.

Extra History

Chin up! No need to be first every time. Having a good time watching the video is more important!

Extra History

I was honestly tempted to ask David to draw Dan Prime with a cartoon villain moustache but... ah, historical accuracy won in the end.

Extra History

I don't know what's stranger, that Ned Kelly is actually killing people, or that eight men went into the outback without being eaten, poisoned or punched to death by any of the horrible animals that live there.

I was wondering what pushed him to his actions in the first episode, and I'm guessing the plot thickens from here. History is so rich & vast that every day I get to learn something new and I'm thankful for it

Film Vagabond

Greta Mob is evolving! Greta Mob has involved into Kelly Gang.

Joo-Hwan Jun

Oh phew! Glad you guys made this one. All that horse thieving from last week has caused problems. Now I know what to do again. Thanks.

Sean Sarff

What is it with cops and making excuses to put people in jail?
