Catherine the Great - V: Potemkin, Catherine's General, Advisor, and Lover - Extra History

Catherine the Great had many lovers during her life, but perhaps none meant so much to her as Grigory Potemkin.

I prefer my silent films with Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton or Harold Lloyd. Don't get started with Talkies, I love Gene Kelly & Frank Sinatra Films every now and then

Thanks. Basically, RT is the Kreml's propaganda loudspeaker towards the west. I mean, to give them credit, they did fake news before it was cool. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RT_(TV_network)#Responses

Yes and that's not the only thing Discovered recently.

I confess I'm not too knowledgeable about the veracity/history of Russia Today, but I'll keep this kind of thing in mind should we use real newspapers again in the future.

Extra History

It's interesting (and a little sad) that their relationship worked better after they stopped being romantic with each other, as all of the insecurities that Potemkin had about being romantically involved with a woman who had power over him seemed to change when the context of their relationship did...

Extra History

If only more historical relationships were like theirs and less like, say, Henry VIII...

Extra History

We plan to, but the list of things we want to include in Lies is super long and some things may have to get cut. Still, yes, we would like to talk about potemkin villages!

Extra History

And how relationships can change over time and still be rewarding to both people in them. :)

Extra History

Pretty good film too, eh?

Martin, I think you've found your niche!

Regarding 6:08 : Using Russia Today as a reference makes me somewhat uncomfortable given their rather special relationship towards the truth (i. e.: possibly "friends with benefits", but certainly not committed or exclusive). Surely there would have been other sources with the same story?

Cifer

Power always complicates relationships...but they made it work in the end.

Timothy McLean

If only more relationships between men and women could be as healthy(ish) as that of Catherine and Potemkin.

Michael Jebbett

The more things change, the more they stay the same...

Michael Jebbett

No mention of potemkin villages? Guess they'd be in Lies episode.

Pavel Yakushevich

Cool example of how a close relationship doesn't have to be sexual.

Stephen Watson

Potemkin was quite something
