It feels like iv'e been drawing so many simplified heads and faces that I forgot how to draw more realistic ones π this was a great refresher on how the construction of the skull and subsequent facial features click together. I should definitely do some more of these

Burga. I wanted to try painting with a more simplified workflow here, limiting myself to 1 layer for paint, and another for occlusion shadows. This restraint forced me to think more carefully about each stroke and shape I made, similarly to a traditional painting. This also pushed me to heavily simplify things, making me tap into my inner designer π
In summary, the limitations I gave myself really freed up my brain to have fun with the shapes and colors, and i think it shows

My new favorite thing to do is take my trusty pencil brush, and quickly sketch in planes of tone and shadow... Also this guy has a massive sniffer

I forgot to post this earlier, but I painted a Nintendo 64 for some reason π
What stuck with me was how to balance my different "shadow groups"... that being my primary form shadows, and ambient occlusion shadows (obviously there's more to it than that, but this is how I've been simplifying shading for the sake of my workflow).
I'm finding what works best for me, is keeping my primary shading quite light, and within a pretty limited value range. This will then leave room (lower in the value range) for strong hits of the dark occlusion shadows
Keeping this in mind while shading prevents my paintings form getting too dark and "heavy", giving room for the occlusion shadows to shine and give that impression of 3-dimensionality. bla blah blah
I hope that makes sense!! I'll do some more paintings and further test this method.

I've been doing a lot of these lately. It's become a form of meditation for me lol- just letting my hand make and explore shapes instinctively... very relaxing

Bite-sized cars π

More tone/plane block-ins with the pencil brush!
I came across this pose on pinterest and really wanted to capture the vibe in my style. Arms are a bit long tho perhaps

That's all for this week! I hope you found this informative, or mildly entertaining at least.
Also, our monthly "pick a character for me to draw" event is coming up soon for paid members. Be sure to submit a character idea if you'd like to see me draw them!
