June "Camel Ale" / July "Video Game" ?
Added 2020-05-31 22:02:42 +0000 UTCTo start with, full disclosure: I do have experience in game development (both hobbyist and professional), and a lot of game jam experience. This is not completely out of left field for me and I should be able to make something simple in a month.
Soo... as a big thank you for the first milestone, I was thinking it might be interesting to share some of my lesser-used talents for this Patreon. I want to make a video game, and I want you to be my play test group!
Doom Eternal done in a month?
No, no, and I put the question like that to keep expectations realistic and low. First off, this is definitely a one-month game jam project. After July ends, it's more or less up to how we feel about whether it gets more love. It will also likely be very simple, either as a purely 2D game, a bare-bones 3D game with simple shapes, a DooM level with new sprites, or even as a text adventure with pictures. This is purely experimental, and failure is always a probability.
So am I getting an art game or what?
Nah, we're going straight for TFs and fetishy weirdness. I know what my audience is here to support. What gets made depends on what theme we go for and I'll be coordinating with you, my patrons, through the lion's share of the process. I'm keeping it month-long to enable audience feedback. You'll also be getting builds over Discord to play and leave feedback on over the month.
What is a Game Jam?
For those unfamiliar, a game jam is a short period of time used for rapid-pace prototyping, usually done with a theme in mind to inspire new game ideas and experiments. Ludum Dare is an example of a game jam, and here are entries that have come out of that in the past: https://ldjam.com/games . Those games are completed in two to three days, where this will be done over the course of July, where I can get time.
What will the theme be?
I don't know! That's up to you! I'll be reaching out to Influencers if this gets the okay, and let them create some themes they want to see (or choose from the themes I haven't done for image polls yet) , and then I'll set up a poll to vote for a favorite theme. The toughest part will be keeping the theme somewhat secret from myself until July, while also setting it up at the same time.
Why July? Why not now?
Commitments, commitments. I over-extended on commissions and agreed to a handful of sequences. I also wanted to ask you about finishing Camel Ale before taking on another large project like a game jam. The votes below will ask about both Camel Ale (a Madlib project started last year and yet to finish). If I focus down commissions and Camel Ale, I will probably have to skip the image theme poll this month, which is why it's part of the poll.
Why are there four options instead of two polls?
Mostly because I want to keep it all to one post. I'll be paying attention to two things:
1. Yay or nay to finishing Camel Ale this month.
2. Yay or nay to PostalRoo's Game Prototype in July.
I value your opinion and if an overwhelming number of you would rather not have something, I won't force it.
So... with all that explanation, please vote! Poll ends in a week.
