I'd imagine this form is some sort of mystical bond between the two, which they can tap into temporarily to become something greater than the sum of its parts. I'm getting some 80s cartoon vibes from the design, so I'd imagine it happening in a transformation sequence not unlike the good ol' action cartoons of old. :D
