I have seen people speak well on certain books on the topic, but it also seems to be a field that is full of misinformation

Right now I am trying to trim fat and build muscle at the same time. I've cut out most snacking and all drinks with calories. I'm consuming somewhere between 100 and 170g of protein a day depending on the day. Consuming about 2500 calories a day as well.
I lift three to four times a week, no cardio.
I've heard people talk about how you need to be in a calorie surplus in order to gain weight in a calorie deficit in order to lose weight. What should I do if I am trying to build muscle and lose fat at the same time? Does a calorie surplus even matter if I am consuming enough protein.
