Oh, sorry yeah, it's definitely just among second language learners. For native Japanese speakers, long and short sounds are totally different, easy to hear, and not substitutes for each other, much like how "Ryan" and "Lion" sound totally different to native English speakers, but Japanese speakers often think they sound the same. I don't know about generation per se, but age didn't have any effects on performances among my study participants (18-35 year olds)

Ryan

Thanks for sharing! That's very interesting!! Would you say it's more prominent in this generation or has it been like this since long even among the older generations? Also on rereading what you said, is it only among foreigners who learn Japanese or even among native speakers?

Bighead

Thank you for the kind words. It's on how people studying Japanese learn the pronunciation of words, in particular whether sounds are long or short (like "oto " (sound) vs "otto" (husband) vs "ooto" (vomit) vs "ootoo" (response)). Basically, I show three things. 1) Learners struggle more with some length contrasts than others (consonant length is more difficult than most vowels, for example). 2) Even when they can hear the difference, associating those sounds with meaning is tough (i.e. they can usually hear that "kita" and "kiita" and "kitta" are different, but it's harder to remember which one means 'came' / 'listened' / 'cut'). 3) The way they remember words preferences short sounds. If they hear "inu," they recognize that as the word for 'dog,' and if I say "iinu," they can tell that's a mispronunciation. If they hear "booshi," they know that means 'hat,' but if they hear "boshi," they think that's perfectly fine, and many even prefer that pronunciation over "booshi." (But "boshi" isn't a real word) So, making a short word long is bad, but making a long word short is okay to them. In the end, I suggest a few things we can do to help them remember words more accurately and productively. That's basically it. :)

Ryan

Wow that's great!! Congratulations! If you're open to answer, what was your paper about?

Late to the party. I defended my dissertation two days ago when this came out, so I've been busy, but happy to see this. 2x24, 3x4, and 4x16 are probably my top 3. :) I like how, at 16:28, we really see how Ushiwaka responds every time Hinata has a big moment. Hinata has his Spiderman save to back row kill, and Ushiwaka just can't let that go unpunished. It's personal for him.

Ryan

Yeah. Tsukki was projecting his own insecurities hard onto Kageyama and Hinata.

BirthdayParty

I've seen this a million times and I still tear up. Who could have thought that one of the most satisfying character arcs would be found in a freaking volleyball anime, huh.

Swanlady

i love it lmao

Hannan

He deserves to be celebrated!

Athena

God, that block is the most satisfying thing. The silence, Tsukki's calm monologue, the SOUND the ball makes slamming down, the face Ushiwaka makes....I LOVE IT. I love Tsukki and that scream really made me emotional my first watch. Someone who puts on this facade of pretending not to care but expresses his excitement through screaming?? Out loud?? With how quiet he is I didn't think he was capable of such volume! We also get to see Tsukki's strategy in the game. He observes, analyses, and executes a plan. Tanaka is definitely showing qualities of an ace! I'm so happy when people notice subtle things the characters do. They really go unnoticed. This game will quite literally take a toll on you with how much tension and anxiety you feel. I'm excited for more.

Athena

This episode and also Coach Ukais VA last line hit hard.

UndeadDesk

lol you can ALWAYS count on Kageyama doing a return dump if the opponent setter does one

Athena

This episode always makes me tear up. Tsukki isn't my top favorite character in this series (though I love him dearly as I do most of the prominent characters in this show, especially the Karasuno boys), yet there's just something about watching his journey from loving volleyball when he was young, to losing that spark and now experiencing "that" moment, reigniting his love and fervour for the sport with an extra salty punch, that makes me feel so happy. Especially seeing his apathetic self show as much emotion as he did this episode, it somehow made me feel so proud. Not to mention, he's the first blocker ever in the Miyagi prefecture to directly kill block Ushiwaka's spike. The surprise in his eyes says it all, it was immensely satisfying. This episode is one of my top 3 favorite moments in the show, if not my top favourite. Also love how Yamaguchi got his chance to shine in the aoba josai match and now it's Tsukki's turn to show his intelligent salty blocking prowess in the shiratorizawa match. Also also, looking back at 1x3, who would have thunk salty Tsukki would give us one of the greatest moments of all time in anime history. Bless his salty soul!! Edit- Also, if I'm remembering it right, that "That one point was worth a 100 points" line by Hinata has more of a context in the manga. During the training arc, Bokuto, Hinata and Tsukki were talking about scoring and how one point or a single play can change the flow of the match or the attitude of the player/s making it seem like a single point was worth a 100. But Tsukki being the logical cynic that he is, can't wrap his head around it. So during his monologue, when he says, it's just one point out of 25, this is just a club, yet his emotions defy his logic, he probably understood what one point being worth a 100 meant at the moment. So it was really cute of Hinata to call back to that. We haven't seen a lot of Hinata and Tsukki interactions these seasons, but there are a couple in the next season that I absolutely adore. I think Hinata's friendship with Yamaguchi is really underrated but Hinata's frenemiship with Tsukki is unrecognized which is sad, maybe because their interactions are very subtle and sometimes easily forgettable if you don't keep rewatching and rereading Haikyuu like the hopeless bum that I am, lol. Its my comfort show!!

Bighead

It’s such a beautiful moment

bl0odm1st

This block and the Aoba Josai match point rally are the two most absolute god level moments in this show. I'll never not get goosebumps when I watch either of them.

Dana

Tsukki said to stop making a fuss, and I took that personally.

Sam B

Never will not cry when I watch that part, even if it's just a short clip out in the wild.

Tanner Hatch

Yeah I was thinking that he never really hit the same level of unprovoked rudeness as I remember from his introduction. Thinking back to my first impression, he was more aggressive in those early episodes

Alex G

I was here :')

Spizami

Like you said, what’s interesting about Tsukki is that he doesn’t fundamentally change as a person. His love for volleyball blossoms, but he’s still the same salty French fry.

Chris Sharpe

I absolutely love the title description haha. Instead of clever jokes it's just raw anger and emotion hahaha. Man, the peak of the mountain for Tsukki's character development. He's such a key to fighting against this team with such a strong attacker. Being a first year and being able to completely stuff block Ushijima's spike is insane. I cried too when he pops off. The first time we've seen that level of emotion coming from him.

Skyler Anderson

Tsukki is the first person to block Ushiwaka in his prefecture. This isnt just Tsukki learning how to defend against Ushiwaka, its him doing something no one else has been able to do before. I think everyone loves Tsukki at this point and i think its because he has never really been that bad. Compared to a character like Bakugo, who has bullied Deku before the timeline of S1EP1, and continued to be rude towards him for pretty much the entire show. Tsukki was only really too much for me in the first few episodes. He was introduced to annoy our main 2 characters and get them heated, but after that you slowly but surely learn to love him.
