The Knifepoint Horror Villain Playoffs, Round 3

Cast your vote! Looks like the Droditch just barely made it into the Ultimate Villain Showdown (U.V.S.), which comes after the 4th round... and as of now, features no actual human baddies.

We’re getting down to it now…. remember, if you don’t see the villain you’re most pulling for on these lists, chances are they just failed to submit their application and $15 processing fee on time. Art by V.V. Glass, from the Knifepoint Horror Anthology

Comments

Well, I can fall asleep to his voice as well

Eva-Lotta Romfelt

Two of the best - Karen and the Walking People ! This is so fun

Sammie Davidson

"...features no actual human baddies" UMMMM fiona and karen?

elliot

Oh baby! Throw that weight around Tarpy!

Thorne Russell

The Walking People for sure! They were in the second episode of Knifepoint I ever listened to, so they have a special place in my heart

Luis Castillo Silva

The pyktid from "cellar"!!

Thomas Little

Karen made me so uncomfortable when I heard "staircase" the first time. It felt like I was listening to someone describe a nightmare I had that I never told anyone about. A perfectly simple and terrifying premise.

Nick Fane

I can give you initials, which is a clue in itself…that’s as far as I’ll go

Lori K.

Oh, the WORST I absolutely GOTTA know...

Soren Narnia

Can’t WAIT for the next round (I have no life)…I am trying to imagine who the contestants will be. So far, all of my picks have been eliminated but that’s alright. No accountin’ for taste. I get the feeling the final group will include my pick for worst of all time. Mwah mwah mwah

Lori K.

That was Mike Harris. Haven't listened to that one in a long time!

Soren Narnia

I hope the art from “thrifting” submits a group application

C

Sporangula was great, who was the narrator?

Eva-Lotta Romfelt

Very tough round. You could build the solid foundation for a villainous Cooperstown on this bracket alone.

Bob M.

plague is one of my all time favs so gotta go with sporangela

Amy Sloan

Yeah, but you know Moonkeeper, always changing things. It’s snackshop today and like, espadrilles tomorrow. I can’t be expected to keep track of new words of the day, I have enough problems.

Emily T

Same!

Dahn (Ucongold)

first time ever saying this but i’m team karen

Austin

Walking People. They just give the hebegebes.

Hilde Marciniak

Ps. Voted for Vonna - there is so much ambiguity in Lockbox that I come back to it again and again. It's just stunning, a masterpiece and so many levels of horror.

Karen Coaching For positive health!

I'm just so happy as the word 'Droditch' bugged me for ages and I now know HOW IT'S SPELT!

Karen Coaching For positive health!

All the terabytes, half the carbs!

Thomas Little

I grew some sporangela just as a seasoning—works well in pasta sauce.

Soren Narnia

I also love sporangela, in part because I have grown some. I know it cannot defeat the juggernaut that is Karen, alas. I love your sci-fi pieces, they really have a minimalism to them that pairs so well existential terror, cosmic horror, what have you.

Thomas Little

I just love saying sporangela so it gets my vote

M

tarp

elliot

This one was HARD! I was gonna vote the Walking People in solidarity for WV, but I loooove Sporangela. Even just the word sounds so good in my brain and it’s an OG goodie!

Monica Sheakley

It’s ’snackshop’. 😉

Frequentj

Same! It’s one of my favorites. The word of the day is ‘snackshop’.

Frequentj

Karen walking up the staircase got me hooked on your podcast

Eric

Had to pick Moonkeeper here. They're all creepy but that story is one I find myself going back to again and again, and is one of my first recommendations to people I convince (buffalo) into listening.

Ariadne

I’d have to go with Moonkeeper. He sees me, I’m already dead, because I am never going to know the word of the day.

Emily T

I feel like we need an NIT tourney for the villains who didn’t make it out of Round 1.

Ryan Fahey

Sporangela has always been one of the creepiest and most creative things you’ve ever put into one of your stories in my opinion

Andrew Duffy

Another tough choice, damn! Sporangela, Moonkeeper and Karen... But... The Walking People. It has to be. Legend is my favourite KPH story, mixing classic scary place, strange event retelling with Lovecraftian isolation in the cold.

Brendan

Karen will be the most popular choice, if only because it's probably the most well-known tale thanks to the myriad vid adapts on YT but I had to go for the Moonkeeper. Just above Thresholds and Proof, the CREEPIEST episode from KPH. The scene where the protagonist is 'given shelter' by his co-worker, the door is locked and a car w/their headlights off, pure dread. Good thing we didn't have Gretchen Plauser (or Robin Song itself) in this round, as well.

Jamie G Hardy

That sounds like a winner, Jill. Maybe someone we know on this thread will pounce on that. My memory is painfully selective but it’s at your disposal!

Lori K.

Thank you, Lori. Can I borrow your memory every time Soren releases a new story? Here's an idea. How about a villain who can't remember what they've done so they keep terrifying the same victim over and over in a loop.

Jill E Merrill

"Endgame" was pretty next-level horrific, the overnight haunted house with demonic bacchanalia residue is hard to wear out, but "Staircase" it is. That's the one I I've sent people to first anytime I want to introduce them to the podcast, and I'm sure it will continue to be.

SF

They are creepy tall apparitions from days of yore, walking silently down the road in a blizzard, and into the house of a terrified guy who climbs out the window. Then…the window raises as he cowers on the icy roof. Amazing winter evening story

Lori K.

Pitting The walking people, Moonkeeper, and Karen against each other... What a contest! The peoples champs right here!

Kristoffer Carlsson

Got a feeling there will be a human baddie after this vote.

Lee Wilkins

I meant to say Karen's socially oblivious, not anxious. Sorry. Wordo. Not an anxious bone in her body.

Jill E Merrill

Damn! I’m stuck between the Walking People, who scared the hell outta me when they came inside the house and raised that window…Eeeeeee!! and Karen, who of course creeps the hell out of everybody. Going to listen to both again. Do not want to waste my vote. Edit: not that any vote would be a waste!

Lori K.

Well, I know the Walking People absolutely terrified me but I can't remember exactly who they were. So I voted for Karen. I've probably listened to staircase over ten times. Why? Those creepy crawly hands. Reciting all those pet names. Nothing like the oxymoronic socially anxious psychopath. This story's been made into a video. It's a classic. Well done, Karen. Well done.

Jill E Merrill

First off, how dare you raise the bar that high with such an epic comment. Second, what an epic comment.

Jeffrey Young

As a side note: I'm not trying to disenfranchise amputees, I just think it's hard to be menacing if you can't rub your hands together whilst scheming. How can one be a dangerous villain when one is... mostly armless. By God. I did it.

Jeffrey Young

Kare for sure. I think all of us know a creepy weirdo that everyone just discounts as being harmless. And yet this is a pretty common serial killer trope in real life.

Sara Fleming

Unfathomable Harvester Worms in their darting, silent spacecraft? What could be more sinister than that?

Andrew Doss

"Spor-AAHN-juh-la"!

Andrew Doss

I suppose the world-ending sporangela ought to win, but I'd rather face that than Vonna Minter. I don't want someone that unhinged yet determined coming after me.

James McClenathen

If The Walking People have a million fans, then I'm one of them. If The Walking People have one fan, then I'm THAT ONE. If The Walking People have no fans, that means I'm wandering the snowy hills and roads of Grenza.

RetroBot

It was definitely a tough round, Legend is one of my favourites but Karen just gives me the chills.

Nicole Michele

Always Karen.

Albin Glasell

I mean, she is the thing from the hallway come to get you

Elliot Lem

Holy moly this is a TOUGH one

Doug Reed

Surprised sporangela isn't doing better considering it can grow literally anywhere and has those harvester worms as henchmen. I'm rooting for the walking people, in spite of the knowledge that at least one of the crew is a dadgum bilateral amputee AT BEST

Jeffrey Young

Oh man. Moonkeeper; Walking People and Karen? This is too difficult to choose.

Elliot Lem

It's gotta be creepy Karen for the win.

Nicole Michele

Tough one! Moonkeeper is iconic but the walking people edge it out I think. I found them scarier!
