I've Been Reincarnated As A Summoned Beast: Chapter 1

Zero

Being given a second chance at life is something I’m sure a lot of people have contemplated. Your life could be amazing or in the depths of hell, but everyone always has something they truly regret. What would you want to do if you were given that kind of amazing opportunity? Would you want to regress and have the chance to change everything that went wrong in your past life?

Maybe go somewhere that has nothing to do with your past world or shoot yourself a thousand years into the future and try your luck at something completely different. My personal reincarnation after my death was something I could have never imagined, but at the same time, it was something I very much enjoyed.

Twenty years ago…

I woke up in a new world I’d never seen before; it was a green landscape for as far as I could see with running hills and large mountains in the distance with snowy white peaks. The sky was a bright crimson, giving off a very ominous feel, with actually having multiple moons.

The darkness of night seemed to last three to four times longer than the day. The scariest part was having no streetlights, flashlights, or even candles. Luckily my vision adapted to my surroundings very quickly, which allowed me to make my way around even in the pitch-black void that was the night.

My body was the biggest surprise, with no longer being able to walk on just two legs; instead, I had to move around on all fours. That’s when I understood that I also had a fifth appendage on the back of my body that was frolicking all around.

Yes, that’s right, I have a tail! Somehow I had been reincarnated into a new world as some kind of animal. Moving over to a lake that was near my current location, I finally got the first look at my new appearance, and let’s just say I was shocked.

What I saw was a silver fox looking right back at me. The eyes were piercing with a bright blue glow, giving off a dangerous aura that would send most people running for the hills. I had become a fox! It’s not like I’m really complaining because of my fascination with them in my past life.

I had this obsession with fox girls, and I would regularly put them as my desktop background. The thought of one being my self-proclaimed spirit animal was something I used to joke about. But who would have known I would actually become one! Where are the fox girls?

My desire was never the actual fox but the cute fox girls with human appearances having fluffy tails and ears. Would I even be attracted to a normal female fox? Now, being a part of their species. But that would be something I would never have a chance to experience because I had come to find out later I was the only living fox in this chaotic world.

The first day getting used to my new surroundings and body contained multiple life-threatening situations. Luckily, I had a surefire way to get away from any type of danger and also avoid it if at all possible. For some reason I had my very own sensor-type ability that could zero in on any threat.

It was very similar to the power level scouter from Dragon Ball Z. I was able to easily confirm my chances of winning or dying just from the feel of the target. This was my first goal in this new world: figuring out how to use this amazing ability to avoid any unforeseen enemies that could possibly be the end of me.

On my second day, I saw something that would forever shape my worldview of my new environment. There was a giant firebird in the sky giving off flames that could almost burn my fur, being a good mile away from it. I was getting all kinds of alert alarms yelling at me to run away and hide.

This would be a constant struggle for my first year learning how to survive in this dangerous place. Every hour I would have to turn tail and run in the other direction because of another threat that would start moving in my direction.

Luckily, being a fox gave me good speed and high agility, which allowed for a quick getaway from most predators. Sleeping was a luxury that would happen very rarely with the insane amount of threats that were currently roaming around.

My first hunt implanted some much-needed enlightenment on my new body and possible evolutions. As I killed my first rabbit, I felt something weird shift inside me. As if something had been added to my very being, I couldn’t quite understand it the first time around. But, with time, I finally came to realize what it meant.

It’s too bad I didn’t get an easy-to-understand status screen, but instead my body had some kind of cultivation capacity. The more I would kill, the more my body started to grow. As if I was sucking up the life force of anything I killed. This gave me my second goal in my new home. Finding as much prey as possible and pushing this feeling to the brink.

The first three years I spent trying to raise my inner level were the most grueling and terrifying experience of my life. So many close calls with multiple types of predators, and on occasion I would be running for my life for more than a twenty-four-hour period. To put it simply, it was a fucking nightmare!

Finally! I had reached my goal of raising my life force to the brink as if the cork was about to pop. I just started calling it a life force because I had no idea what else made sense. As I got the final kill that pushed me over the edge, I felt my whole body freeze up as if the core of my very being had become cold itself. In no time at all I had become a literal ice cube as all my surroundings faded.

A few hours later…

Coming back to my senses, which felt like a considerable amount of time, the first thing I had noticed was my fur turning from a silver shade to a more snowy white. I was also giving off a type of foggy blue aura around my whole body. There were multiple types of beasts all around my current location that were all frozen solid. Thankfully, none of them were able to get near me during this time.

The biggest change to my body, besides my fur changing colors, was having a second tail. That’s really cool! I wondered how many tails I can actually achieve, or is there even a limit? My best educated guess would be nine, but that’s only because of all the anime I’ve seen in my past life.

My body had received significant upgrades as if I were a completely new fox. I had come to the conclusion that some kind of cold-type physique must have just activated as I got my second tail. All my innate abilities, such as strength and agility, had also doubled.

My cold-type aura seemed to be some kind of passive effect that I was unable to control. Unlocking more tails will probably give me more authority over it, as in any type of cultivation story. The more powerful you become the better control you will have over your body. With now having a third goal of trying to push my body to the limit and getting as many tails as possible decided, I looked towards the future.

I wanted to become the apex predator of this place so I could have a safe and fulfilling life here. My body was at a disadvantage against the other beasts in this area, though, with most of them relying on the element of fire. It’s like having a massive type advantage in Pokémon, but sadly I was on the disadvantaged side.

But I would come to understand later on just how boring that existence would become. Especially when I found out this place had no humans and only beasts that were unable to think outside of their instincts.

With that, two decades had passed by in the blink of an eye as I climbed up to reach the very top, establishing myself as the new ruler of this domain. When it was all said and done, I had achieved up to the seventh tail. This was when my true story would start; little did I know at the time when I had reached the very top of the mountain. Something much more fun was right around the corner.

The snowy white peak of the largest mountain was my current home, with my control over absolute zero becoming a second nature of mine. I could literally freeze everything I see if I concentrated hard enough, as my inner self was a literal freezer with subzero temperatures. Upon receiving my sixth tail, I had become fully capable of controlling this awesome power of cold itself.

It allowed for much easier combat, as my absolute zero aura would completely destroy the fighting morale of most enemies. All their actions would become much slower, making any interactions with a powerful beast of this world a literal joke. I had also decided to start calling myself Zero because of my new main attribute.

Since I had no idea how to categorize my powers, I just used a ranking system from a story I knew in my past life. Beasts were given ranks depending on how strong they were. I unlocked a new ability every time I received a new tale.

One Tail: F Rank - Threat Sensor: Ability to sense any and all threats to a certain distance. It would grow even stronger the more tails I achieved.

Two Tails: E Rank - Physique Upgrades: My body had a major overhaul, and I became a literal bringer of frozen death. I couldn’t help but leak out a white-blue fog that could freeze an enemy as soon as they were touched.

Three Tails: D Rank—High-Speed Regeneration: Any and all injuries would be healed in a short amount of time. This was also upgraded the more tails I achieved.

Four Tails: C Rank - Instincts: If any beast was able to handle my freezing temperature, this would make it very hard to actually land a solid hit. I would compare it to Ultra Instinct in Dragon Ball Super. It was almost like I could predict the future, as if I was able to see any and all attacks before they would land.

Five Tails: B Rank—Frenzy: The more I killed and saw blood, the more excited I would become. It’s as if I was getting a kill streak in an FPS game. The more kills that happened in a certain amount of time, the more power I would feel. But, at the same time, it was a double-edged sword. I would go into a state where it was hard to hold onto my sanity, becoming more of a beast.

Six Tails: A Rank—Absolute Zero: I had finally achieved perfect control over cold itself. The ability to release and harness cold became an extension of my body. My aura with instant freeze-type quality was kept in better check once I received my sixth tail. I could be around weaker animals without them falling dead instantly.

Seven Tails: S Rank - Soul Link: This was the most unique ability so far and also gave me insight into another world. I was seeing somewhere completely different through someone else’s eyes. No idea who they were or why I was seeing from this person’s point of view. But instinctively I knew this would become an important individual in my life in the future.

So far I’ve reached up to seven tails, and each time I’ve received some kind of new ability. It always just came to me as if it was second nature as soon as I achieved the next one. I’m pretty confident I will receive two more abilities, getting up to a maximum of nine tails, but it’s all just a theory at this time. But every story I’ve read in my past life, even though it was fiction, always had a fox with nine tails if they had more than one.

Each tail brought about an increase in strength multiplied by what it was before. It was as if each tail increased my overall power multiplied by the number of tails I currently had. Just how amazing will that feel once I actually achieve the legendary nine tails!
