Talking Simpsons - Hungry Hungry Homer With Dave Schilling
Added 2021-10-06 04:00:02 +0000 UTC
We welcome back podcaster/journalist Dave Schilling--check out his newest podcast Galaxy Brains--as we dig into the world of sports and hunger strikes! Homer learns his baseball team plans to move but no one believes him, so he risks his life on a hunger strike that convinces few people. All that plus the real-life history of the Albuquerque Isotopes and more in this zesty Southwestern blend of a podcast!
Shout out to Henry for pronouncing Calgary correctly!

I don't care for this episode. Outside of "Me so hungy" and Duffman breaking character I find it pretty boring. And Homer's protest doesn't really make sense. The Springfield Isotopes have been a minor footnote the rest of the series and now we're supposed to believe anyone in the town cares if they move? And no disrespect to Stacy Keach, but I found Howard Duff totally forgettable. He's not villainous enough, at most he seems mildly annoyed with Homer.

I always saw this episode in reruns and the ending with the mayor of Albuquerque was always cut and I finally saw the actual ending on Mexican television which surprised the hell out of me.

Small note to say I doubt there would have been a copyright issue using the Caesar Romero Joker because the '66 Batman show was produced by Fox Television and the next year they do an extended bit with Adam West and Burt Ward reprising their roles (as they would do many times until Wests passing in 2017) in the season 14 episode Large Marge.
60s Batman's distribution rights were bought by Disney during the Fox buyout along with The Simpsons but isn't currently available on Disney+ and as far as I could see, isn't freely available on any service except Amazon where you can pay $1.99 per episode. I hope Disney fixes this soon because in this age of online edgelords romanticising the Joker's sociopathy and actors mailing rats to their coworkers under the guise of 'method acting', I yearn to relive simpler times, when the Joker was a goofy villain who tries to take over Gotham by becoming good at surfing and the actor cared more about the preservation of his mustache than getting the role.

My grandparents retired to New Mexico so I went there many times in the 80s, each time landing in the Albuquerque airport so I saw it transform from a tiny local stop to a major hub. We did indeed go to an Albuquerque Dukes game at some point, and if I ever find my way back there I would so take in a 'Topes game. Minor league baseball is fun!

Warner Bros owns DC, but Fox produced the 1966 Batman show...for ABC. It's a miracle all those corporations agreed to give us the Blu-ray set that we got.

Doesn't Fox own Batman? I would think they could use the Joker if they wanted

I remember the local talk radio station here in NM replaying Homer saying "the Albuquerque Isotopes?!" clip after the episode aired so much that it has engraved itself in my memory.

Bob! I had the same thing happen the one and only time I went to Albuquerque! I was telling my co-worker about the Isotopes, and he didn’t believe me until we drove past a highway sign for the Isotopes. I got to be like “SEE?!” and it was wonderful.

I honestly really enjoyed revisiting this episode and was surprised how much of it had stuck around in my brain. Hell, I say "hungie" at least once a week and I had forgotten it originated from a *season 12* episode. It's nice when they can still focus on a damn premise (more or less) for the whole episode and not jump to something else entirely in every act - though it also helps that this actually has GOOD JOKES thanks to John Swartzwelder. Also nice to have Dave back on the podcast!
