Talking Simpsons - The Way We Was With Jeff Dutton

As we head back to the 1970s to hear about Homer and Marge falling in love, we're joined by our third member from the band & podcast The Sloppy Boys, writer/director/musician Jeff Dutton! Jeff joins us for an important chapter in Simpsons history, as the family is left with no choice but to do their first flashback episode after their TV set breaks. Not only do we see true love blossom, but we also see the first McBain, the first Jon Lovitz, and so much more, all in one podcast!

In my school we had both a Junior prom, which was in the gym, and a Senior Ball which was in a rented venue (mine was in a vintage theater). By the time this episode aired I had been to two proms and was prepping for my third...of five total. I never dated a girl in my own grade, so my dates were all either older or younger. I don't recall a school approved after party for the Junior proms but at my Senior Ball, I won a small color TV!

Sounds like my high school in the 2010s too.

i went to high school in the 2010s and we still had a “just far enough off school property” area for the students who smoked. depending on how rowdy you were feeling, it was either called ‘smokers’ row’ or ‘stoners’ row.’ the school cop could often be found mingling with the smokers at lunch when he wasn’t practicing bike tricks in the outdoor sitting area. it was also generally the spot you went if you wanted to buy xanny or coke but that was kept very hush hush mostly through the threat of violence.

First time commenting here! I actually wanted to follow up about what you were saying about using songs in movies. It's funny because I have never seen once upon a time in Hollywood but out of time is my favorite rolling stones song and since I was a kid my dad has always said it makes him think of the movie "coming home." And this was not a small independent movie or anything, it actually was nominated for 8 academy awards and won 3 in 1978. I think it's funny how you both see it as a unique song choice that no one has used before but if my dad heard you say that he would absolutely throw a fit. Regardless, I love the fact it was used in both movies just because of the fact it exposed our generation to an awesome, underappreciated rolling stones song.

I saw TMNT in the theater with my 5-y.o. brother and my mom. I remember him excitedly recounting the film to my dad and quoting Raphael's "daaaaaaaaaamn!" without understanding that it was a curse word. My dad just laughed it off but I, as an oldest kid, was saddened that he got away unpunished with this freebie.

As a love of old music, I need to point out that Van McCoy's "The Hustle" being played in this episode is actually an anachronism. This episode specifically takes place in 1974. "The Hustle" was released as a single on April 18, 1975 where it would be the song of the summer and help usher disco in as a mainstream force. Another, less egregious musical anachronism is in the scene where Homer is in his bedroom listening to Average White Band's funk classic "Pick Up the Pieces." While that song did come out in 1974, it wouldn't come out until July of that year. This episode is implied to take place in Spring. I will say this, the musical anachronisms in this are way more forgivable than the one's made in "That 90s Show."

As a kid I never knew that Homer said "for you" in French. Stupid kids.

I always heard Marge as saying "my prom date" but the captions and Frinkiac say "hi, prom date." Just now, I listened one more time and finally heard "hi."

The origin of the bra-burning feminist trope is likely a protest against the Miss America beauty pageant in 1968. There is a Wikipedia article about it, simply titled Miss America protest and with a paragarph called "Origin of "bra-burning". Long story short. There was a trash can which was (or was not) lit on fire and in this trash can may have been bras.

Jeff used the word "fumfer". Had to look it up. That's going in the vocabulary.

I love that every time the wax coloring implements come up you have ask the guest their pronunciation. In the east coast specifically the Philly era we pronounce it the same way we say the golden thing a king wears, a “crown”.

It's 1:37 in the morning and I *just* got back from a friend's house streaming the Simpsons arcade game so that yelling sound is so fresh in my mind.
