Love Exposure (2008): Movie FULL LENGTH Reaction! PATREON COMMISSION!

**EXPOSED HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

*TRIGGER WARNING: Abuse, gore, self-harm, & SA-adjacent themes/content are in this film*

Where...do I even start? I had to take an intermission in the middle of this FOUR HOUR extravaganza! Here's the recipe for this film:

Add 1 part Kung Fu Hustle, A shot of Quentin Tarantino, a cup of religious symbolism, a dash of romance, a pint of perversion, and a slice of 2008 humor and this film will take you on a gory, deep journey into Japanese family structure, the lack of connection in relationships, and how faith can be so easily manipulated and warped. WHAT a film!

Thank you for the comment and kind words! I don’t blame you for taking a few sittings with this one! I was so floored by this movie and what an experience!! I can only imagine a day of watching this! The heightened environment I think helped to balance but also make you expect more gory and bloody violence than was expected. The music was such a great element of the movie! HAHAHA, the idea of chopping in half - I MEAN, I could see that, too, but there were some creative/thematic parts, like you said, that needed to stay there! 🙂 I love that there were cameos throughout this - that’s great! Sakura Ando was SO good as Aya - legendary acting, honestly! Okay, so I now EXACTLY what you mean - the lampoon of it all makes it hard to critique without missing to acknowledge the point of it, but yeah, I could have gotten into that more, but it was a long movie already! 😛 But, yeah, don’t get me started on Berserk – that’s for its own video essay. SO. MANY. THEMES. OF. RESISTANCE. So many. In all shapes and sizes. I HATED watching Yu “manufacturing sin” to appease to someone - I just wanted to hug him. And yeah, Aya’s whole storyline was right up there in opposition to his own. This movie, if anything, really makes you think about all of that and how our trauma from our younger years influences a lot of what drives us into adulthood. Thank you for the comment and kind words!! This month has been a ride with the commissions!

I can so see it! The way that it vibes up there with NGE and other series that are avant garde is so apparent! Thank you for the comment - I'm so glad you got to witness me experiencing the madness! :D

Loved the reaction and discussion! Got through this over a few sittings, with several along with my weekend morning coffee. Perfect way to start the day. 😆 I have to say it was really interesting to watch someone who had no idea what they were walking into. The first time I watched this was in about 2009 or 2010 and I knew generally what I was getting into (as I had seen some of Sion Sono’s work previously), and it was a cinema day trip with some friends so was An Experience! May be part of why this was actually a lot less violent than I recalled, less of a heightened environment. Love the use of music as this kind of constant sacred/profane running engine, I think because a lot of music used is so recognisable it is something which really helps with the runtime. I do feel that you were very generous with the ‘could have shaved off 20-30min,’ I’d say chop this thing in half and it’d work just as well. 🤣 But I get the creative/thematic aspect of the endurance exercise. Think the actors all did so well with the material and it was fun to see so many cameos by Japanese comedians and various talent. But I have to specifically highlight Sakura Ando (Aya) because she is one of my absolute favourite actors! 🥰 And this was one of her earliest roles. I am on a very long journey of making sure that I see the entirety of her filmography. Adore her and this was amazing work, and a great example at how naturally she comes across in any role! 🥰 I do think that this suffers from the perennial problem in works which claim to lampoon, satirise and/or address objectifying misogyny – it is unable to depict and critique without fully indulging in it for entertainment and titillation. I have some incredibly uncharitable opinions as to why but I'll save it. And you know, I think it still ended up having a better go of it than Berserk claims to. 🤣 Now themes of resistance?! A smorgasbord. 😆 Especially against institutional, religious and cult control. Love the way it ridicules performative purity and exposes the hypocrisy of some of the rituals everyone is forced to take part in. The way Yu attempts to ‘manufacture sin’ to try to give his father what he wants was just so painful to watch. And then, especially with Aya’s story, this shows very clearly how that kind of trauma forces obedience and the ways cults/religions/groups take advantage of this very specific kind of vulnerability. This was really fun to revisit. Thank you to Sean for this commission! 🥰 Looking forward to next week! 💙
